Crucially,thisprocessreliesonthewatercontainingenoughcalciumcarbonate(碳酸钙)

totraptheplastics.Inthestudy,boilinghardwatercontaining300milligramsofcalcium

carbonateledtoanalmost90percentdropinplastics.Butinsampleswithlessthan60

milligramsofcalciumcarbonate,boilingreducedthelevelofplasticsbyjust25percent.

Additionally,theresearchdidn’tincludealltypesofplastics.Theteamfocusedonlyon

threecommontypes—polystyrene,polyethyleneandpolypropylene—andtheydidn’tstudy

otherchemicalspreviouslyfoundinwatersuchasvinylchloride.

Still,thefindingsshowapotentialpathforwardforreducingmicroplasticexposure—a

taskthat’sbecomingincreasinglydifficult.Evenbottledwater,scientistsfoundearlier

thisyear,contains10to1,000timesmoremicroplasticsthanoriginallythought.

Scientistsarestilltryingtodeterminehowharmfulmicroplasticsare—butwhatthey
