experimentsunderdifferentconditions.Theydiscoveredthatthefinalproduct
dependedgreatlyonthesurfaceontowhichthesoilwasprinted.Whenprintedon
stainlesssteelorglasssurfaces,thematerialdidnotstickwell.However,itbonded
stronglywithalumina-silicateceramic.Thetwosubstancesformedstablecrystals
together,whichimprovedmechanicalstrengthandthematerial'sresistancetosudden
temperaturechanges.
Thesurroundingenvironmentalsoplayedanimportantrole.Changesinoxygen
levels,laserpowerandprintingspeedallaffectedthequalityofthematerial.Becausethe
moonhasanextremeenvironment,includingvacuum,finedustandsharptemperature
differences,itisdifficulttofullyrecreatesuchconditionsinalaboratory.Thismeansthat
moretestingisneededbeforethetechnologycanbeusedinrealmissions.
Despitethesechallenges,researchersbelievethisapproachcouldsupportfuture

about7,000peopleeverytwoyearsbetween1999and2020.Thestudyfoundthat
averagelevelsofserumbicarbonate,asubstancecloselyconnectedtocarbondioxide
inthebody,haverisenbyroughly7%since1999.Duringthesameperiod,levelsof
calciumandphosphorusinthebloodhaveslightlyfallen.Thesechangesoccur
alongsidethesharpincreaseinatmosphericCO₂,whichhasgrownfrom369partsper
million(ppm)in2000toover420ppmtoday.
Bicarbonatehelpskeepthebody'sacid-basebalancestable.WhenCO₂levelsrise,
thebodykeepsmorebicarbonatetomaintainanormalbloodpH.However,long-term
changesinthishomeostaticprocessmayhaveeffectsonhealth.Researchersestimate
