DuringanFTMthemothersays,“Idon’tunderstandwhymychildhastobeplacedawayfromme.”Thegrandmotherresponds,“Ifyouputyourkidsfirstanddidn’tdodrugs,youwouldn’tbehere.”Thegrandmotherthenstartstocallthemothernamesandbecomesdisrespectful.Howwouldyouhandlethissituation?

Pre-MeetingDiscussionProvidetheDHHS1160,AFamily’sGuidetoPMD’s&FTMs.Agenda–Comeupwithagendaitemstogethertokeepthemeetingontask.IdentifythemainpointstobediscussedduringtheFTM.Brainstormpossibleservicesoractionstoaddressissuesorconcernswiththefamily.Utilizefamilysupports.Location-considersafetyandcomfortandletthefamilyhaveinput.

DuringanFTMaworkermusttalktotheparentsabouthavingtorecommendTerminationofParentalRights.Howwouldyouhandlethisdiscussion?

Non-English-SpeakingClientsACCOMMODATIONFORDEAF/HARDANDNON-ENGLISH-SPEAKINGCLIENTS:MDHHSisresponsibleforprovidinginformationandassistancetoapplicantsandrecipientsofdepartmentprogramswhoaredeafand/orhardofhearing.SeetheSRM401,EffectiveCommunicationforPersonsWhoareDeaf,DeafBlind,orHardofHearing.Applicantsandrecipientsofdepartmentprogramsaretobeinformedthedepartmentwillarrangeandpayforthecostofabilingualinterpretertobepresentatallinterviewsandsituationswhereaninterpreterisnecessaryandappropriate.SeeSRM402,LimitedEnglishProficiencyandBilingualInterpreterServices,formoreinformationonhowtoarrangeandpayforabilingualinterpreter.AccommodationinEmergencySituations:Whenanaccommodationisnotreadilyavailableduringanemergencysituation,casemanagersshouldconsiderthefollowingoptions:Seekassistanceofasupportpersonwhocancommunicatewiththeindividual.Utilizeanyavailablecommunication(suchaswritingortelephone-basedinterpretationapplicationsonworkissueddevice).Casemanagersmustassessthesafetyofanyallegedchildvictimsandsafetyplanininvestigationsinvolvingperson(s)whoneedInterpreterResourcesHowtoConductanFTM
