Thehandmadecardboardprotestsigns,includingoneheldbya13-foot-tallIguanodondinosaur
skeleton,reflectthevoicesoftheyoungpeople.Theyaremeanttoalertandinspiremuseum
visitorsabouttheongoingsixthmassextinctionevent.
“TheButterflyEffect”istheresultofacollaborationbetweenthemuseumandschoolthat
beganinNovember2023.Studentsvolunteeredtheirtimeafterschooleachweektolearnabout

togivetheoutdoorsanothershot.
Onthelake,ourcanoesmovedthroughblue-blackwater,stirredbyourstrokes.Onlypaddle
splashesandchildren’slaughterfilledtheair,minglingwithpinescentsandloon(潜鸟)calls.
Thekidshelpedeachotherliftheavypacks,thesamekidswho,intheirregularcitylives,refused
tocarrytheirownschoolknapsacksdowntheblock.Imarveled.
Oncewereachedcampandsetupourtents,thekidsranaroundtheforestgatheringdrywood.
Wesataroundthecampfire,talkedandateourpreparedfood.Thekidssangsongsandplayed
hand-slappinggames.Therewasnocellservice,sowecouldn’tevenchecktheweather.Mythoughts

Pestsdestroylargeamountsoffood,andchemicalpesticideusehasrisenby50percentin
thepastthreedecades,asthegrowingglobalpopulationdemandsmorefood.However,increasing
evidenceofsignificantharmtonatureandwildlife,andsometimeshumans,hasledtoarising
numberofpesticidesbeingbanned.Somefarmersalreadyusealternativestochemicalpesticides,
suchasintroducingotherinsectsthatkillthepests,butthenewstickydropsarethoughtto
bethefirstbiodegradablepesticidetobedemonstrated.
Thedropsweretestedonthewesternflowerthrip(蓟马),whichisknowntoattackmorethan

500speciesofvegetables,fruitsandornamentalcrops.Morethan60percentofthethripswere
capturedwithintwodaysofthetest,andthedropsremainedstickyforweeks.
Theteamistestingtoseeifscentscanbeincorporatedintothedropstomakethemeven
moreattractivetothethripsortoattractnaturalpredatorsofthepests.Thestickydropswill
biodegrade,buttheteamisinvestigatinghowlongthistakes.Theyarealsoassessinghowquickly
dustreducesthestickinessofthedrops.

self-defenseproject,confirmedtheteam’scommitmenttoadvancingthestickypesticide.“We
hopeitwillnothavenearlyasdisastroussideeffectsonthelocalenvironmentoronaccidental
poisoningsofhumansaschemicalpesticides.Andtheotheralternativesaremuchworse,which
mayleadtopotentialstarvationduetocroplossortheoveruseofchemicalpesticides,”he

amygdaladecreasedafterthewalkinnature,suggestingthatnatureprecipitatesbeneficial
effectsonbrainregionsrelatedtostress.
“Theresultssupportthepreviouslyassumedpositiverelationshipbetweennatureandbrain
health,butthisisthefirststudytoprovethecausallink.Interestingly,thebrainactivity
aftertheurbanwalkintheseregionsremainedstableandshowednoincreases,whicharguesagainst
acommonlyheldviewthaturbanexposurecausesadditionalstress,”explainsSimoneKihn,head
ofthegroup.
Theauthorsshowthatnaturehasapositiveimpactonbrainregionsinvolvedinstress
processingandthatitcanalreadybeobservedafteraone-hourwalk.Thiscontributestothe
understandingofhowourphysicallivingenvironmentaffectsthebrainandmentalhealth.Even
ashortexposuretonaturedecreasesamygdalaactivity,suggestingthatawalkinnaturecould
serveasapreventivemeasureagainstdevelopingmentalhealthproblemsandreducingthe
potentiallydisadvantageousimpactofthecityonthebrain.
