Inrecentyears,cloudcomputinghasestablisheditselfasoneofthebasictechnologiesfordataprocessingandanalysisintheIndustry4.0.Buttransferringdatatoacentraldatacenterandplayingitbackoftentimesbecomesabottleneck.Thedatavolumesincreasecontinuously,thebandwidthoftheconnec-tionislimitedandmakestimelyutilizationdifficult,datamustbeconvertedandsecurity-relevantaspectsmustbetakenintoaccount.Addingtothisaretheoftenhighcostsfordatatransferandstorage.

EDGE-Computingcanclosethisgap.Inmostcases,itisnotneces-sarytotransferallthedatathataccumulatesinmachinesandplantstothecloud.The“EDGE“(ofthecloud),ofproductioncanbeequippedwiththeappropriatedevicesandcomputingpower,andtheproductiondatacanthusbecollected,processedandevaluateddirectlyatitspointoforigin.Theresult:transmissionbecomesunnecessary,andperformanceandproductivitycanbeincreaseddirectlyinproduction.Secureandcost-effective,sincethedataneverleavesthecompany.
EDGE-Computingoffersaneasy-to-implementplatformforcentralsoftwareanddevicemanagementaswellasforcentral(software)updates.EDGE-Devicescanbeconnectedeasilyinanexistinginfrastructureforadministrationandmaintenance-efficiently,securely,andcost-effectively.UsableEDGE-Appsareavailableontheplatformandappdevelopers,systemintegrators,machinebuildersoruserscanexchangeappswitheachother.
Thus,EDGEclosesthegaptothecloudandenablesend-to-endverticalintegrationattheOTlevelaswellashorizontalintegra-tionattheITlevel.Datacanbeusedquicklyandeasilyandmadeavailableforautomation.Evendatathatpreviouslyremainedunused.

AccordingtoanestimatebytheInternationalData Corporation,theglobalvolumeofdatawillincrease byapproximately27%annuallyfromaround33zettabytes(ZB)in2018to175ZB(1zettabyte=1billionterabytes)in2025.AccordingtotheGermanEconomicInstitute,anincreasingnumberofdigitalapplicationsincompaniesnotonlyusedata,but“simultaneouslygeneratesnewdataandthusenablesnewdigitalapplications-akindof“digitalperpetuummobile“that
produces“analmostinconceivableamountofdata[...]“.
Today,the“SinglePointofTruth“(SPOT)isalreadythedreamofeveryproductordatamanager.Itisnotonlycrucialthatdataexistonlyonceandinasinglestoragelocation,towhicheveryauthorizedparticipanthasaccessatanytimeandfromanyaccesspoint.Inthefuture,theauthenticity,synchronicityandconsistencyofthedatasourcewillbecomemuchmoreimportant-notonlyfortime-criticalapplications,butalsoforbusiness-rele-vantprocessessuchastheinsuranceorownershipclassificationofevents.Becauseassoonasdataistransferred,aggregatedorinterpreted,theserequirementsareusuallynolongermet.
Thesolution:Dataisreadatthetimeofitscreationandtherelevantstatementfortherespectiveapplicationisdeliv-ereddirectlyatthedatasourceonthebasisoftheorig-inaldataandinatamper-proofmanner.ThisispreciselythetaskperformedbyanEDGE-Node,whichreadsthedatadirectlyattheprocessandmakesitavailabletoallauthorizedparticipantsbeforeaggregation,transmissionandfurtherprocessing.Everystakeholder,fromtheoper-atortotheserviceproviderandtotheinsurer,canthusaccessthedatarelevanttothematanytimeandensure

The“Agile“approachisderivedfromsoftwaredevelopmentandisbasedonaniterativeandadaptiveapproachwheretheoverallpackageisbrokendownanddeliveredinindependentmodules.Heterarchicallyorganizedteamscanreactquicklytochanges.
Thatiswhyheterarchicalstructuresarebecomingestablishednotonlyinsoftwaredevelopmentorprojectmanagement(SCRUM),butalsoinmodernmanagement–wheretheybecomethebasisofagileorganizations.Inaworldcharacterizedbyincreasingvolatility,uncertainty,complexityandambiguity(abbreviatedVUCA),agilityisbecominganessentialprerequisiteforfuturegrowthandsurvival,especiallyforgloballyoperatingcompanies.

Thereareseveralreasonstoincreaseflexibilityinmanufacturingwithregardstoexternalrequirementsfromcustomersaswellassuppliers.Rigidsupplychainsincreasetheriskthatplanscannotbemet.Insomeindustries,therearealsotrendstowardsbatchsize1,“masscustomization”,withproductlifecyclesshorteningatthesametime.
Onewaytoshortendevelopmenttimeandthustime-to-marketforfasterresponsestorapidlychangingrequirements,istoincreaseparallelizeddevelopment
andatthesametimereduceteamdependencies.Clearinterfaces,bothtechnical(standardizedAPI)andorganizational(functionalaswellascultural),makeanimportantcontribution.However,theintegrationeffortofparallelcomponentsandtestsmustnotbeneglected.Cross-functionalandheterogeneousteamshelptofindrobustsolutionsandtoleavefamiliarpaths.Anotheroptionistoformpartnerships.Partnerscancontributeveryspecializedexpertiseorfinancialresources,theprojectriskisspreadoverseveralshoulders,andtheresultingnetworkmayopenupabroaderchanneltocustomers.

Remoteaccesstomachinesiswidespreadandfurtherontherise.IncreasinglyinexpensiveormorepowerfulhardwareandgrowingfieldsofapplicationwithInternetconnectionsofthemachinesaswellasthesimplificationandstandardizationofthesoftwarecomponentsareloweringtheentrythresholdmoreandmore.
Inadditiontoaccessintheeventofmalfunctions,machinestodayshouldcontinuouslyprovidetherelevantdataandalwaysbeuptodate.Thisway,theincreasinglydynamicandflexibleoperationofthemachinecanbemonitoredandrespondedtoquickly.Applicationsthatareonlymadepossibleefficientlybythecomprehensiveconnectionofdatafrommachinesare,forexample,OEE,CO2footprintofproducts,productioncostsandproductionduration,analysisperproductvariantorrootcauseanalyses.
Insomecases,itisnot,ornotwithouthigheffort,possibletoforwarddatatothecloud.Nevertheless,different
peoplefrompossiblydifferentcompaniesaretoworkwiththedataoraccessthemachinesonanadhocbasis.

“Smart“businessmodelsalsoconsistoftheelementsandmech-anismsdefinedabove.Inthiscontext,“smart“primarilystandsforthedevelopmentandprocessingofdatawhichcannowbeleveragedtoapreviouslyimpossibleextentandqualitythroughso-calledIoTtechnologies.Sincedigitaltransformationusuallychangesmorethanoneelementofthebusinessmodel,alargenumberof“smart“variationsemerge.

Thecharacteristicsalreadymentionedenablethehandlingofcompletelynewusecases,theuseofnewtechnologies,andthestrongerdovetailingofITand
OT.However,sincethisrequirestheinvolvementofalargenumberofcontributors,thisinevitablyresultsingreatercomplexityofindividualsolutions.Toensurethatthiscomplexinteractioncanrunreliablyandcanbescaled,new(distinct)rolesmustbedefined,includingtheirrightsandobliga-

ArchitectureandcomponentsofanEDGE-System
EDGE@Work–(r)evolutionaryTransformation
Theblueprintofaforward-lookingEDGE-Technologyismainlycharacterizedbyamulti-role/userandservice-ori-entedapparchitectureforlow-costembeddedtargetsystems.Coupledwithgreaterdegreesoffreedom,itprovidestheopenness,modularity,andscalabilitytointeractwiththesystematdifferentlevels

Inthemeantime,containerizedapplicationshavealsobecomewidespreadasanabstractionofmicro-services.Createdintheappropriateprogrammingenvironment,thecontainerhasanapplicationinterface(API)throughwhichthefunctionsareaddressed.TheorchestrationandparameterizationofthecontainersisusuallycarriedoutviatheEDGE-Operatingsystemandusesvirtualizationtechnologiesforthispurpose.
ThenewfoundfreedomtochooseanduseanappisamongthegreatestbenefitsofanEDGE-System.Atthesametime,however,thisfreedomalsorequiresastronglyanchoredlegalandorga-nizationalregulatoryframework.Thearchitectureprovidesthenecessarystandardizationforthecreationanduseofinterfaces.Thecommunitysupportstheirusewithbestpracticeexamplesandthuscreatesasmartentryfornewusers.
Inadditiontotheone-timeprocessofprogramminganapplica-tion,itisvitaltotakeitsmaintenanceovertheentirelifecycleintoaccount.Incontrasttoothermarketsegments,componentsinindustrialautomationareoftenoperatedfordecades.Thisraisesthebasicquestionofresponsibilityforsoftwareupdateswhere/asannualreleasecyclesgenerallyapplyaspartoftheprogressivemergingofITandOT.Thepotentialriskofmalwareandvulnerabilitiesinthearchitecturethereforeplacethehighestdemandsonrobustnessandsoftwarequality.
