Introduction

WelcometotheIpsosMobilityReport,whichexploreshowmobilitychoicesshapeoursocieties—fromaccessandinclusiontosafety,liveability,and

climateimpact.

Aroundtheworld,mobilityisboth

deeplypersonalandprofoundlypublic:

itdetermineswhocanreachjobs,

schools,andcare,howourstreetsfeel,andwhetherwemeetenvironmental

goals.

Asweseeinthisreport,manypeople

remaincar-reliant:onaverage,43%saylivingwithoutacarwouldbe

impossible.

Atthesametime,publictransportiswidelyviewedasaccessible(62%onaverageacross31countries)andsafe

(also62%),thoughaffordabilityandaccesslaginruralareas.

Youngerpeopleandurbanresidentsaremoreopentoalternatives,pointingtoafuturewherewalking,transit,and

sharedoptionsplayalargerrole.

Choiceofmodemattersfortheplanetandforpublicspace.Nearlyhalf(46%)wouldprefertousepublictransport

overpersonalcarsforenvironmental

reasons,67%supportdedicatedcyclinglanes,and61%saytheywouldchooseactivetraveltostayhealthy.

Safetyisasharedpriority:66%supportstrictertrafficlaws,withstrong

backingformeasuresthatprotectpedestriansandcyclists.

Technologyisreshapingmobility,butacceptanceisuneven.

Globally,47%finddrivinganelectric

vehicleappealing,and53%expect

manyconsumerstoadoptEVsby

2030—yetenthusiasmislowerinNorthAmericaandEurope,andonaveragedropsoutsidecitiesandamongolderpeople.Viewsonautonomyaresplit

(36%wouldfeelsafeinaself-driving

car;36%wouldnot),reflecting

persistenttrustanddata-privacyconcerns.

Onaveragepeoplearemoresplitonself-

drivingcars.Asmanysaytheywouldfeelsafeinoneaswouldnot.EuropeansandNorth

ThistrendcontinueswithelectricvehicleswithBelgium,France,Germany,theUSandCanada,allmorelikelytosaydrivinganelectriccaris

notappealingtothemthanitis.LATAMandAsiaiswhereinterestisgreatest.

However,across31countriesthereissupportforintroducingbenefitstoincreasetheuptakeinEVs.Peopleinallcountriessurveyedare

morelikelytosupportreducingroaduser

Theprocessofbuyingacarisnotimmunetogeo-politics

Thenationalityofacarmakerisanissuefor

manyaroundtheworld.Almostoneintwo

(48%)across31countriessaytheywould

avoidpurchasingacarmadebyanautomakerfromspecific.JapanandSouthKoreaarethemostlikelytoagreetothisstatement.Two-thirdsinbothcountriessaytheywouldavoidacarmakerfromaspecificcountry.WhenweaskedthoseinJapanandSouthKoreawho

wouldavoidacarmakerwhichcountrytheywouldsteerawayfrom,Chinacameouttop.

Elsewhereweseetensionsbetween

neighboursplayarole.Forty-eightpercentofCanadians,whowouldavoidacarmaker,

wouldnotpurchaseanAmericancar.

Havingacarisnotjustanessentialchoicebutanemotionalonetoo

Automakers

1.Carsremainemotionallyandpracticallyessential.Thedatashowsthat43%ofcarownerssayliving

withouttheirvehiclewouldbe"impossible,"anddrivingisthefavouritemodeoftransportin22of31

countries.Thisgoesbeyondutility-peoplegenuinelyenjoydriving.There'sdeepemotionalattachmentandloyaltytopersonalvehicleownership.Offeringtheopportunitytoleanintotheexperiential/emotional

aspectsofcarownershipindesign,marketing,andbrandmessaging.

2.AcceptanceandapathyofEVs.AsiaandLatinAmericashowstrongopennesstoelectricvehicles,whilekeyWesternmarkets—France,theUS,Canada,andGermany—actuallyhavemorepeoplerejectingtheideaofdrivinganEVthanembracingit.BrandsneedtorecognisethattheirmostmaturemarketsmayrequirelongerICEandhybridtransitionperiods,whileemergingmarketsinAsiaandLATAMcouldleapfrogtoEVadoptionmorequickly.China'sdominance(67%appeal,73%expectingmassadoptionby2030)makesittheflagship

marketforEVinnovationandvolume.

3.Brandoriginisnowavulnerability.Thisshowshowquicklydiplomaticdisputestranslateintoconsumerrejection.Whereyourbrandisfromisnolongerjustamarketingasset—it'sapotentialliability.Across31countries,Chinese(41%),Indian(38%),andAmerican(24%)vehiclesarethemostlikelytobeavoided.

Governments

1.Roadtollsseenasawaytoencouragemoresustainabletransportoptions.Onaverageacross31

countries46%supportcongestionpricingasawaytopromotesustainabletransporthabits.SupportrisestooneintwoforthosewholiveinanurbanareaandamongGenZandMillennials.

2.Thereissupportforusingcaralternativesinurbanareas.While48%ofdriverswholiveinanurbanareasaytheyprefertousetheircar,theyadmititwouldbepossibleforthemtogiveitup.Two-thirdsofpeopleinanurbanareasaypublictransportisaccessibleandthesamesaytheywouldprefertousetransportformslikewalkingandcyclingtokeepthemselvesactive.Toaddtothisthereiswidespreadsupportacross

countriesandfromruralandurbandwellersformorecyclelanes.

3.Belieflowerspeedlimitswouldimproveroadsafety.Morethanoneintwo(55%)saytheyareconcernedaboutroadsafetyinmyareaandtwo-thirds(66%)supportstrictertrafficlaws.Governmenthasastrong

sociallicensetotakeactioninthisareaandreducingspeedlimits,especiallyonresidentialstreetshasthepublic,sbacking(70%).

Arepeoplewillingtogiveuptheircar?

Across31countries39%saytheir

primarymodeoftransportisbycar.ItishighestinNewZealand(66%)andthe

US(64%).Forcarandtruckowners,

theirvehicleisseenasanessentialpartoftheirlife.Onaverageacross31

countries43%sayitwouldbe

impossibletolivewithouttheircar.

Whilethesameproportionsayitwouldbepossibleforthemtolivewithout

theirownvehicle,buttheypreferhavingone.

Wherepeopleliveplaysabigpartin

this.Sixinten(60%)ofpeoplewholiveinaruralareasaylivingwithoutacarisimpossible,while46%ofsuburbanitesand37%ofthosethatliveinanurbanareasaythesame.

However,thisdoesn,tmeanurbancarownersarereadytogiveuptheir

vehiclejustyet.Oneintwo(48%)say

thattheycouldgiveuptheirvehiclebutwouldprefernotto.

Thedesiretodriveacargoesbeyondaneedtodoso.Formostit,stheir

favouritewayfromgettingfromAtoB.

In22of31countriessurveyedpeoplesaydrivingisthemodeoftransporttheyenjoymost.

InColombia,Peru,India,SingaporeandSouthKoreapeoplearemostlikelytoenjoyusingpublictransport,while

Indonesiansaretheonlycountryto

choosemotorbikes.PeopleinBritain,IrelandandArgentinafeelawalkisthebestwaytogetaround.

Amongyoungerpeopleandthoseonlowincomesthereismorevariationonwhattheyseeastheirfavouritemodeoftransport.

Forpeopleonalowincome,theyareaslikelytochoosetheircar(24%)astheirfavouritemodeoftransportastheyarepublictransport(24%)andwalking

(23%).

WhileGenZprefertheirowncarfor

gettingaround(26%),likeother

generations,theyaremuchmorelikelytolikepublictransport(22%)comparedtootheragegroups(BabyBoomer14%,GenX16%,andMillennial(15%).

Whileonlyoneinfour(25%)across31countriessaytheyusepublictransportastheirmainmodeoftransport,thereisbroadsatisfactionwiththepublic

transportsystemsacrosscountries.

Across31countries62%saypublic

transportinmycountryisaccessible.Inallcountriesarepeoplemorelikelytofeelitisaccessiblethannot.Sixty-twopercentalsosaypublictransportis

safetouse.

Onthequestionofaffordability,52%thinkthisisthecaseforpublic

transportintheircountry.However,in13countriesaminoritythinkpublic

transportisaffordableandinthe

NetherlandsandSwedenmorepeoplethinkitisnotaffordablethando.

Forty-sixpercentacross31countriessaytheywouldchoosepublictransportoverapersonalcarforenvironmentalreasons.Only25%disagreewiththis.

However,therearebigdifferencesin

attitudesacrosscountriesonthisquestion.

Thailand(64%)andIndia(62%)arethemostlikelytosaytheywouldusepublictransportforenvironmentalreasons.Ineightcountries-Australia,New

Zealand,France,Sweden,Netherlands,Belgium,CanadaandtheUS-are

peoplemorelikelytosaytheywouldnotusepublictransportforenvironmentalreasonsthanwould.

Whiletherearedifferencesacross

countriesthereislessofadifferenceacrossagegroups.GenZ(48%)arethemostlikelytowanttousepublic

transportforenvironmentalreasons,with42%ofBabyBoomers,theleastlikely,sayingthesame.
