Researchersfoundthatthenumberofteethandamountofgumdiseasewaslinkedtochangesinthelefthippocampusofthebrain.Forpeoplewithmildgumdisease,havingfewerteethwasassociatedwithafasterrateofbrainshrinkage,whichisthesameforpeoplewithseveregumdiseasehavingmoreteeth.Afteradjustingforage,researchersfoundthatforpeoplewithmildgumdisease,theincreaseintherateofbrainshrinkageduetoonelesstoothwasequaltonearlyoneyearofbrainaging.Bycontrast,forpeoplewithseveregumdiseasetheincreaseinbrainshrinkageduetoonemoretoothwasequalto1.3yearsofbrainaging.
