M:

Hello,

everyone.

Today

I’d

like

to

tell

you

about

a

great

woman

—Florence

Nightingale.

Florencewas

born

in

1820.

As

a

child,

she

was

homeschooled

by

her

father.

As

she

grew

up

and

becamea

young

woman,

she

decided

she

wanted

to

train

to

becomea

nurse

and

tend

the

patients.

Shewas

famous

for

her

work

in

nursing

during

the

outbreak

of

the

Crimean

War.

In

1853,

the

Crimean

War

broke

out,

and

soon

many

injured

British

soldiers

were

suffering

in

terrible

conditions.¹⁸

Florence,

a

trained

nurse

at

that

time,

was

asked

to

go

to

Crimea

to

help.

(Text

10)

She

agreedand

was

sent

to

Barrack

Hospital.

Once

there,

Florence

saw

thousands

of

sick

and

wounded

men.

The

hospital

was

dirty

and

smelly.

At

first,

all

Florence

and

other

nurses

were

allowed

to

do

was

clean.

They

were

not

allowed

to

nurse

the

sickmen.

But,

as

more

and

more

injured

soldiers

startedto

arrive,

the

doctors

were

forced

to

ask

Florence

for

help.¹⁹

And

Nightingale

herself

wandered

the

wards

at

night,

providing

support

to

the

patients.

She

gained

the

respect

of

the

soldiers.

When

Florence

arrived

home,

she

became

a

hero.

(Text

10)

She

received

lots

of

awards,

evenone

from

theQueen.²⁰

Florence

was

engaged

in

improving

more

and

more

hospitals.

She

wrote

letters

to

hospital

managers

all

around

England

to

put

pressure

on

them

to

change

hospitals

for

the

better.

Florence

even

founded

her

own

training

school

for

nurses

at

Saint

Thoma’s

Hospital

in

London.
