HowtheExportandImportPriceIndexesarecompiled

Definitionanduse

TheExportandImportPriceIndexesmeasurefluctuationsinthepricesofgoodsexportedandimported.Theindexesareusedtogaugetheeffectsofpricefluctuationsoftheseexport/importitemsondomesticpricesandthechangesintheircosts.

Frequency

Atthebeginningofeachmonth,pricesforthepreviousmontharesurveyed.

Pricessurveyed

Averagemonthlypricesaresurveyedinprinciple,baseduponthepointsatwhichtheexport/importcontractsareenteredinto,sothattheymayserveasleadingindicatorsofdomesticprices.

ExportpricesaresurveyedonanFOBbasis,andimportpricesonCIF.Forsomeitems,however,tradepracticesareapplied.

Itemssubjecttosurvey

Onlyitemswhoseexport/importamountsaccountformorethan1/2,000ofthecountry'stradingvolume;thatarerepresentativeofthepricemovementsofitemsgroupedwithinsimilarindustries;whosequalitystandardsareuniformlymaintained;andwhosetimeseriesonpricesaretenable,aresurveyed.Asof2026,214itemsforexportsand240forimportshavemettheserequirements.

Itemsmarkedwithoutcomparablepricequotationsforconsiderableperiod(e.g.vessel,weapons,aircraft,worksofart)areexcluded.

ㅇBasicclassification:TheindustrialclassificationsetoutintheKoreaStandardIndustrialClassification(KSIC)isappliedwithnecessarymodificationsasthebasicclassification.Thisisfurtherbrokendownintotwosub-categoriesfor

exports-agricultural,forestry&marineproductsandmanufacturingproductsandthreeforimports-agricultural,forestry&marineproducts,miningproductsandmanufacturingproducts.

ㅇSpecializedclassification:Foruserconvenience,theindexesarealsoclassifiedintofoods/non-foods;energy/itemsotherthanenergy;informationtechnology/itemsotherthanIT;andfoods&energy/itemsotherthanfoods&

TheExportandImportPriceIndexesarecompiledonthreedifferentbases:theKoreanwon,thecontractcurrencies,andtheUSdollar.Usersarehenceadvisedtocheckthebasecurrencyfirstbeforeusingtheindexesforstatisticalpurposes.

TheExportandImportPriceIndexesforcurrentmonthispreliminaryandsubjecttorevisionnextmonth.
