againstaphilosophicalcorpse,theobsoletepaleoconservatism—amixofnativism,
protectionismandisolationism—ofthe1930s.Asthecandidates'debateinArizonalast
weekshowed,theentireprimarycampaignwillbefoughtonBuchanan'sgrounds,

commonsense,weusedifferentsystemsofunderstandinggestures,posture,silence,
spatialrelations,emotionalexpression,touch,physicalappearance,andothernonverbal
cues.Culturesalsoattributedifferentdegreesofimportancetoverbalandnonverbal
behavior.E.Thedifferencewithspacepreferencesisnotthattheyexist,butthe
judgmentsthatgetattachedtothem.Ifsomeoneisaccustomedtostandingorsittingvery
closewhentheyaretalkingwithanother,theymaysectheothersattempttocreatemore
spaceasevidenceofcoldness,oralackofinterest.F.ItissaidthataGermanexecutive
workingintheUnitedStatesbecamesoupsetwithvisitorstohisofficemovingtheguest
chairtosuitthemselvesthathehaditboltedtothefloor.G.Someelementsofnonverbal
communicationareconsistentacrosscultures.Forexample,researchhasshown(hatthe
emotionsofenjoyment,anger,fear,sadness,disgust,andsurpriseareexpressedinsimilar

butnotanger,andformentodisplayanger,butnotfear.Atthesametime,interpretation
offacialexpressionsacrossculturesisdifficult.InChinaandJapan,forexample,afacial
expressionthatwouldberecognizedaroundtheworldasconveyinghappinessmay
actuallyexpressangerormasksadness,bothofwhichareunacceptabletoshowovertly.
