Theteamtrackedeachant'smovementwithanautomatedsystem,measuringbothtravel
timeandhowdirecttheirpathswere.Antsthatreceivedonlysugarshowedlittle
improvementovertime,indicatingtheywerenotlearningthereward’slocationeffectively.
Forantsexposedto25ppmofcaffeine,foraging(觅食)timedecreasedby28percentwith
eachvisit.At250ppm,theimprovementreached38percent.Thehighestcaffeineleveldid
notproducethesamebenefit.
Theimprovementwasnotduetoincreasedspeed.Instead,caffeinatedantsfollowed
moredirectroutes,suggestingstrongerfocusandbetterspatialmemory.Theirpaceremained
unchangedacrossalldoses,buttheirpathsbecamelesswindingatthelowerandintermediate
levelsofcaffeine.
Thefindingssuggestthatcaffeinecouldplayaroleinimprovingpestcontrolstrategies
forArgentineants.Byhelpingantslearnbaitlocationsmorequicklyandbringbackmore
nestmates,caffeinecouldincreasehoweffectivelypoisonspreadsthroughacolonybeforethe
antsdetectit.However,theresearcherscautionthatmoreworkisneededbeforeapplying
thisapproachinreal-worldsettings.
