Butasgreenhousegaseswarmmuchoftheplanet,drivingstrongerpolarwinds,somescientiststhinkwarmwatercarriedbyacircularcurrentwillstarttoinvadetheEastAntarctica'sonceunassailableice.Cooperationofmorethan60scientistslastyear,publishedinNature,estimatedthattheEAISactuallyaddedabout5billiontonsoficeeachyearfrom1992to2017.

EricRignotoftheUniversityofCalifornia,andcolleaguescombined40yearsofsatelliteimageryandclimatemodellingandfoundthatoverallAntarcticanowsendssixtimesmoreiceintotheseaeachyearthanitdidin1979,withthemajoritycomingfromtheWestAntarctica.ButtheEastAntarcticawasresponsibleformorethan30%ofAntarctica'scontributiontothe13.8-millimetersealevelriseoverthepast40years."Themorewelookatthissystem,themorewerealizethisisfragile,"saysRignot.
