Theteamthenhadover2,400peoplechatwithbothoverlyagreeableandnormalAImodels.Participantsconsideredtheagreeableresponsesasmorereliable,whichstrengthenedtheirownviewsandmadethemmorelikelytousethatAIagain.Interestingly,theythoughtofbothtypesasequallyobjective,suggestingtheycouldnotseewhenanAIwasbeingtooagreeable.

Whydoesthishappen?OnereasonisthatLLMsrarelysay"youareright"directly.Instead,theyuseobjectiveacademiclanguagetoindirectlysupporttheuser.Forexample,whenauseraskediflyingtohisgirlfriendaboutbeingunemployedfortwoyearswaswrong,theAIrepliedthathisactions,whileunusual,seemedtocomefromagenuinedesiretounderstandtherelationshipbeyondmoney.
