Currently,psychologicalproblemsaboundoncollegecampuses.A2001reporton

BeijingUniversityStudentMentalHealthshowedthat16.51percentofBeijing's

collegestudentshaveseriousproblems.Themajorityisfromruralareas.Datawere

collectedbetweenlate1997andearly1998,andpsychologistsestimatethatthe

currentratioisashighas30percent.ThismeansnearlyonethirdofChina's23

millioncollegestudentshaveseriouspsychologicalproblems.AccordingtoShiGang,

apsychologyprofessoratChinaAgriculturalUniversity,eachyearhasitsown

psychologicalproblems.Freshmenhavetroubleadaptingtothenewstudy

environmentandwithinterpersonalrelations.Afterscholarshipsareissuedatthe

endofthefirstsemestertostudentswhogettherequiredscores,many

sophomoresfindthepressureintolerable.Anotherproblemisthatsexual

psychologylagsfarbehindphysiologicalmaturity.Senior'smainconcernisfinding

PsychologicalissuesarerarelytakenseriouslyinChina.Peoplewithpsychological

problemsareviewedas"madmen,"somostarereluctanttoseekhelp,often

preferringtogototemplesforspiritualsolace.Psychologicalconsultationis

relativelyrareinChina,andthoughcollegestudentsaregenerallyopen-minded,

whensuchproblemsoccur,theydon'tgotopsychologists,"Iprefertosharemy

healtheducationhasnotbeensystematic.AccordingtothereportonBeijing

UniversityStudentPsychologicalMentalHealth,halfofthesecentershavenofixed

fundsandmostareundertheStudentAffairsOffice.Someuniversitiesdonothave

asingleconsultationroom,letaloneauxiliaryequipment.Apsychological

consultantataBeijing-baseduniversitysaidmostcenterswereestablishedatthe

requestoftheMinistryofEducationandthatconsultantshavenoformaltraining.

DoctorDongattheEasternPsychologicalCounselingCentersaid:"Thefunctionof

campusconsultantsistomakeabasicassessmentofproblems,andtransfer

studentswithseriousproblemstoprofessionalorganizations.Thepityisthatthey

arenotqualifiedtodomore,asinsomecases,itwouldbemucheasiertohelpthose

indistressiftheirproblemsweretreatedearlier."

seriouslylackingbecauseofalackofprofessionalstaff.Theratioofstudentsto
