ThetremendoussuccessoftheBonnChallengeinitsfirstnineyearsfillsmewithprideandoptimism,asitvalidatestwodecadesof
pioneeringworkandilluminatesapathto2030andbeyond.
WhenIUCNfirstcoinedtheconceptofforestlandscaperestoration(FLR)in2000,wemaynothavereferredtoitasaNature-based
Solution(NbS)yet-becausewedidnothavethatterminologyatthetime-butatitscore,thisapproachperfectlyembodiesthevastpotentialofnatureasasolutiontohumanity’schallenges.
FLRharnessesthepowerofnaturetoprovide
benefitstopeople’slivelihoods,improveaccessto
essentialresources,createandrestorehabitatsforcountlessspecies,andstorevastamountsofcarbontohelpmitigateclimatechange.
IUCNhasremainedagloballeaderonFLRboth
politicallyandtechnically,andhasimplementedprojectsandinitiativesinmorethan40countries.
Noneofthose,however,werequiteasambitiousorimpactfulastheBonnChallenge,whichwelaunchedtogetherwiththegovernmentofGermanyin2011.
Itlaidoutaboldvision:tobring350millionhaof
degradedlandscapes,anareaalmost10timesthesizeofGermany,underrestoration,by2030.Thiswould
notonlyincreasethefoodandwatersecurityfor
hundredsofmillionsofpeople,butalsocontributetofulfillinginternationalclimatechange,biodiversityandlanddegradationcommitments–andultimatelyto
achievingtheSustainableDevelopmentGoals.
Overthepastnineyears,participantsoftheBonn
Challengehavetakenhighlyencouragingstepstowardsmakingthisvisionareality.Asofthisyear,74countries,
conservationalliancesandprivateentitiesaroundthe
globehavecommittedtobringover210millionhaof
landunderrestorationthroughtheircommitmentstotheBonnChallengeanditscontributingregionalinitiatives.
Whererestorationprojectshavebeenimplemented,
thepositiveimpactsforpeopleandnaturehavebeen
significant.Forexample,since2011,Rwandahas
restored700,000haoflandacross80individualprojects,applyingIUCN’sapproachtorestoringforestlandscapes.Ithasmanagedtoincreaseitsagriculturalproductivity
andlocalpeople’sincomesaswellasfoodandwater
securitywhilereducingvulnerabilitytoclimatechange,landslidesandotherdisasters.Thecountry’searly
leadershiponrestorationinspiredmanyotherstopledgecommitmentstotheBonnChallenge,fromAfricaand
theAmericastoSouthandEastAsia,withinroadsnowalsobeingmadeinEurope,theCaucasusandCentral
Asia.Forexample,Azerbaijanwillimprovetheresilienceoflocalcommunitiestoclimatechange,reducepovertyandconservebiodiversitythroughfocusingonitsTugaiforestsandrestoring270,000haoflandby2030.
Scotland,whichhaspledgedtorestoreover170,000ha,willestablishnewwoodlands,boostforestcoverandhelppeatlandsrecover.

Inthisreport,wecelebratethesuccesstheBonn
Challengehasseensofar.Butwearenotabouttorestonourlaurels.Bysharingexamplesofbestpracticesfromaroundtheworld,thereportalsoaimstobuild
onthissuccess,andasthetitlesuggests,provideinspirationtoRestoreourFuture.
AsweheadintotheUNDecadeonEcosystem
Restoration,andasgovernmentsandorganisationsarerethinkinghowweworkwithandexistinnatureinapost-COVIDworld,theBonnChallenge’s
achievementsprovideaverytimelydemonstration
ofthepotentialofNbStoaddresssociety’sproblems.WiththeJuly2020launchoftheIUCNGlobal
StandardforNature-basedSolutions,IUCNanditspartnershaveputforwardabenchmarkingtoolthat
willallowindividuals,conservationalliances,and
businessestoscaleuptheirambition,strengthentheircommitmentstotheBonnChallengeandimplementthemeffectivelyandsustainably.
Ifwebuildonthemomentumcreatedoverthelastnineyearsandseizethiscrucialmomentintime,wewillnotjustbring350millionhaintorestorationby2030.WewillindeedRestoreOurFuture.

WhenlaunchingtheBonnChallengein2011,IUCNandtheMinistryknewwehadambitiousgoals.But,whowouldhaveguessedthattheinitiativewouldsetsuchatremendousballrolling?Althoughforestlandscaperestoration(FLR)hadbeenpilotedinvariouscountries,
therewasnosinglecollaborativeefforttohelpscaleituptoreachitstruepotentialglobally.
Justunderadecadelater,wehave74pledgersfrom
61countries,8statesand5associationsworking
intensivelytobringover210millionhaofdegraded
anddeforestedlandsintorestoration.ThesecollectiveeffortsmaketheBonnChallengeoneoftheworld’s
largestcollaborativeeffortsdedicatedtotherecoveryofforestlandscapes.
TheBonnChallengehastriggeredregionalinitiativespromotingcollaborationbetweencountriesonFLR,unlockednewfundingandledtothedevelopmentofnewpoliciesandtoolstoadvanceimplementation.
But,itwasnotonlythespeedofprogressworldwide
thatignitedtheenergyoftheBonnChallenge:itistheoverwhelmingcollectivecommitmentacrossalllevelsofengagementtorestoreourfuture.ItthereforecomesasnosurprisethattheseedsfortheUNDecadeon
EcosystemRestoration2021-2030weresownwithintheBonnChallengecommunity,thusexpandingtheglobalrestorationmovementtoincludeallterrestrialandmarineecosystems.
ItisclearthatFLRisanidealnature-basedsolutionthatcanhelptheglobalcommunitymeetitsbiodiversity
andclimatetargets,andotherUNSustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs).
TherecentlylaunchedIUCNGlobalStandardfor
Nature-basedSolutionsisaclearindicationthat
governmentsandtheprivatesectorarerecognising
thatforestsandecosystemscanprovidetheanswerstoachievingasustainableandresilientsociety.
TheGermangovernmenthasalwayschampionedthe
conservationandrestorationofforestlandscapes.Since2008,undertheInternationalClimateInitiative,morethan200millioneuroswereinvestedinFLRandBonnChallengeprojectsacross48countriesworldwide.
Thesenumbersarenotonlyproofofourcommitment,
butalsooftheneedforFLR.TheCOVID-19pandemic
hasmadeitabundantlyclearthatweneedanewand
improvedrelationshipwithnatureandhasbolsteredourcommitmenttoadvancingFLRglobally.
Thenextdecadeiscritical.Wehavetosucceedinfulfillingthe2030targetoftheBonnChallengetoworktowardsbringing350millionhaintorestoration,andwehave
tobeambitiousinimplementingtheUNDecadeon
EcosystemRestoration.Ifwefailtoachievethesegoals,itwouldbepointlesstohaveanotherUNDecadededicatedtothistopic.
Wehaveputthebuildingblocksinplace.WhenitcomestoFLR,weknowhowandwheretorestore,weknowhowtomonitorrestorationprogressinordertopinpointwhere
weneedtoimproveandhowtoscaleup.Allweneedisthatsmallpush,thatnextcatalysttorestoreourfuture.IinviteandencourageyoutojoinourFLRfamilysothattogether,wecanachievethe2030BonnChallengegoalandthe
goalsoftheUNDecadeonEcosystemRestoration.

IUCN’sAmbassadorfortheBonnChallenge
WearelivingthroughunprecedentedtimesduetotheCoronaviruspandemic,butCovid-19isnottheonlythreatwefaceintheworldtoday.Climatechangehasbecomeanexistentialthreat.Allyou
needtodoislookatCalifornia.AccordingtoJeremyRahn,DivisionChiefoftheCaliforniaDepartmentofForestryandFireprotection“Californiahasexperiencedahistoriclightningsiege”.
Nearly11,000lightningstrikesinthreedaysignited
morethan300fires,whichforcedthousandsofpeople
toevacuate.Thefirescameduringarecord-breaking
heatwave;duringwhichtheyreportedwhatcouldbe
thehottesttemperatureeverrecordedonearth129.9F.ArecentstudyfromOhioStateUniversityreported
thatGreenland’sicesheethasmeltedtoapointofno
return.Inaddition,scientistsbasedatLeeds,Edinburgh
UniversityandUniversityCollegeLondonwhohave
analysedsatellitesurveysoftheplanet’spoles,mountainsandglacierstomeasurehowmuchicecoveragewaslostbecauseofglobalheatingtriggeredbyrisinggreenhousegasemissions-concludedthatatotalof28trilliontonnesoficehavedisappearedfromthesurfaceoftheearth
since1994.ReviewsoftemperaturesforMay2020bystandard-bearerclimatedataorganisationsincluding
NASA,NOAA,BerkeleyEarthandtheEuropeanagencyCopernicus,unanimouslyconcludedthatMaywasthewarmestMayonrecordandit’slikelythat2020willbethehottestyearsincerecordsbeganinthelate1800s.
Climatechangewillhavedevastatingeffectsoneveryaspectofourlives;foodandwaterscarcity,poverty,pandemics,security,humanrights,massmigration,
economicsandpoliticalunrest.
Forover40yearsIhavecampaignedindefenseof
humanrightsandenvironmentalprotection.In2005IfoundedtheBiancaJaggerHumanRightsFoundation(BJHRF)tobeaforceforchangeandavoiceforthe
mostvulnerable:children,womenandindigenouspeople.Ourmandateistodefendhumanrights,achievesocial
justice,andprotecttheenvironment.TheBJHRFis
currentlycampaigningtoendviolenceagainstwomenandgirlsandachievegenderequality.
InMay2012,IwasappointedBonnChallenge
AmbassadortotheIUCN.Iwasdelightedtoaccept
thisrolebecauseIbelieveitsobjectivesarecriticaland
achievable.ThroughoutthisperiodIhavewitnessedthetremendousbenefitsofforestlandscaperestoration
(FLR)asatooltomitigateclimatechange,spur
sustainable,inclusiveandequitabledevelopmentand,
mostimportantly,improvethelivesofpeople.TheBonnChallengeisaglobalefforttobring150millionhaof
degradedanddeforestedlandsby2020and350millionhaby2030.Today,61nations,8statesand5associationshavetakenuptheBonnChallenge,committingtorestore210millionhaofland.
Therestorationofdegradedanddeforestedlandsisnotsimplyaboutplantingtrees.Peopleandcommunitiesareattheheartoftherestorationeffort,whichtransformsbarrenordegradedareasoflandintohealthy,fertile
workinglandscapes.

agriculture,protectedwildlifereserves,ecological
corridors,regeneratedforests,managedplantations,agroforestrysystemsandriverorlakesideplantingsto

protectwaterways.Andithasaroletoplayinachievinggenderequity:withitsemphasisontheparticipation
ofallstakeholdergroupsinrestorationplanningand
action,FLRhelpsensurethatwomenandmenatall
levelsareheard.AccordingtotheUNEnvironment
Programme,restoring350millionhaby2030will
sequesterup13-26gigatonnesofcarbondioxide.If
sequesteringcarbonweretheonlybenefitofwelcomingtreesandshrubsbacktodegradedlands,somewould
thinkthatwasenough.Butweknowtherearemany
morereasonsforrestoration.Forexample,theTingua-BocainaBiodiversityCorridor(TBBC)initiativein
Brazil,managedbytheInstitutoTerradePreservacio
Ambiental(ITPA),hasrestoredabout100,000ha.In
2012,Ivisitedthisinitiative,whichissecuringthewatersupplyforRiodeJaneiro,helpingbiodiversity,and
creatinghundredsofnewjobs,whilegeneratingco-benefitsforclimateadaptationandmitigation.
Ican’temphasiseenoughthattheBonnChallengehasgreatpowertoeffectchangeateverylevelofsociety,
byrestoringdegradedanddeforestedlandscapes,
governments,companies,organisationsandprivate
landownersareprovidingacornucopiaofbenefits
andcontributingtoachievingdiversenational
andinternationalobjectives.Itwillbenefitpeople
everywhere,includingtheworld’spoorestandmost
vulnerablebycreatingjobs,stablewatersuppliesandmoreclimateresilientcrops.WiththeBonnChallenge,wecanplanttheseedsforahealthierplanet.Seedsthatwillgrowandsavelivesandinjectbillionsintothe
world’seconomies.

ImpactoftheBonnChallenge
Theimpactofthe
BonnChallengeonnationalcommitmentstoaddress
climatechange,biodiversityandlanddegradation
Since2011,61countries/nationalgovernments,8states/sub-nationalgovernmentsand5associationshavetakenuptheBonnChallenge-committingmorethan210millionhaintotheworld’slargestforest
landscaperestoration(FLR)initiative.
ArecentanalysisbyIUCNhasidentifiedclear
synergiesbetweentheBonnChallengevoluntary
commitmentsandthetargetscountrieshave
alreadysetoraresettingundertheRioConventionsonBiologicalDiversity,ClimateChangeand
CombatingDesertification.
Theanalysisfoundthat165countrieshaveset
FLR-alignedtargetsand/actionsacrossdifferentRioConventions,and51havespecificallyincluded
FLR-alignedactionsintheircommitmentsunderallthreeconventions.
Thereisconsiderablepotentialforcountriesto
strengthenNationallyDeterminedContributions
(NDCs),post-2020BiodiversityplansandLand
DegradationNeutrality(LDN)targetsthroughtheir
BonnChallengecommitments,tomovetowardsalowemissionandsustainableworldforpeopleandnature.
Thereisaparticularlyurgentneedtosignificantly
raiseclimateambitionandactionsfromtheforest
andlandusesectortowardsthecritical,upcoming
climatesummit,COP26plannedforNovember2021,inGlasgow,UK.
SignificantprogresscouldbeachievedifmorecountriesweretoincorporatetheirvoluntaryBonnChallenge
targetsintotheir2020NDCs.Morespecifically:
•117of166countries(70%)havenotyetset
quantitativeFLR-alignedtargetsfromtheforestsandlandusesectortoabsorbCO2.
•Ifthe61BonnChallengecountriesweretofully
incorporatetheirquantitativeBonnChallenge
targetsintotheirNDCs,thiswouldbring205.78
millionhaofincreasedclimateambitionandactionintheforestandlandusesector.
•Inaddition,ifallofthoseBonnChallenge
commitmentsexpressedinhectaresweretranslatedtotonsCO2e,itwouldalsosignificantlyincreasetheaccountableforestandland-basedambitioninNDCs.

NDCs,settingLDNtargets,anddefiningthePost-
2020GlobalBiodiversityFramework,moveforward,countrieshaveagreatopportunitytocapitaliseon
theirexistingandnewrestorationcommitmentsandquantifiableactionsandharnessthepotentialofFLR-alignedactionstoaddressthegoalsof
theConventionsandtheBonnChallengeina
complementaryandmutuallysupportingmanner.
TheBonnChallenge’ssynergiesacrossallthree
RioConventionsoffermajornewopportunitiestocatalysepublicandprivatefundingforFLRintothenextdecadeandbeyond.

In2016,MalawiannouncedanambitiousBonnChallenge
commitmenttobring2millionhaofdegradedlandunderrestorationby2020.Recognisingthebenefitsoftheapproach,theGovernmenthascommittedafurther2.5Mhatorestorationby2030,totalling4.5millionha.
Tohelprealisethisnationalcommitment,theMalawiYouthForestRestorationProgram(MYFRP)wasborn.TheMYFRPinitiative
ralliesyoungentrepreneurstotackleforestrestoration.Thishelpstotackleunemployment,improveslandproductivityandsafeguardsbiodiversity;fosteringasustainableandprosperousnation.
Challenge
Foodandwaterinsecurityisanurgentchallenge
Malawiansfaceeveryday.Pooragricultural
production,heavilydegradedsoilsandrisinginvasivespeciesstacktheoddsagainstfarmers-reducingtheirabilitytogenerateanincomefromfoodproduction
tofeedtheirfamilies.Theseissuesaresuperchargedbyincreasinglyfrequentandseverenaturaldisasters,causedbyclimatechange.
Amassive79.5%ofMalawi’spopulationisunder
theageof36.1Whileayouthfulpopulationholds
greatpotentialasapowerfullabourforce,currentlyunemploymentishigh,leadingtolowlevelsof
educationalandcommunityengagement.2
Toovercomethisviciouscircleofdisengagement,
theDepartmentofForestrysoughttospurgrowth
byrallyingyoungpeoplebehindtherestorationofoneofthecountry’s–andoneoftheworld’smostvital
