Nearbyshipsweredetectedthroughbackgroundnoiseinrecordingsandadatabaseof

shippingreports.

Theteamcomparedthespermwhales'useoftwodifferentvowel-like(像元音的)

clickpatterns,knownasa-codasandi-codas,inthepresenceandabsenceofshipsounds.

Thesound-relatedpropertiesofa-codasarelikethe“a”vowelinhumanspeech,while

i-codasarelikethoseofthe“i”vowel.

Analysesrevealedthatthewhale“vowels”changedbothstructurallyandtemporally

whentherewasnoisepollutionfromboats.Thespermwhalesmademanymorea-codas
