Studyco-authorDavidGruberandhiscolleaguesexaminedmorethan10,000codas
producedby13spermwhaleslivingofftheCaribbeanislandofDominica.Theywere
recordedbetween2014and2016throughrecordingdevicesattachedtoeachanimal.
Nearbyshipsweredetectedthroughbackgroundnoiseinrecordingsandadatabaseof
shippingreports.
Theteamcomparedthespermwhales'useoftwodifferentvowel-like(像元音的)
clickpatterns,knownasa-codasandi-codas,inthepresenceandabsenceofshipsounds.
Thesound-relatedpropertiesofa-codasarelikethe“a”vowelinhumanspeech,while
i-codasarelikethoseofthe“i”vowel.
Analysesrevealedthatthewhale“vowels”changedbothstructurallyandtemporally
whentherewasnoisepollutionfromboats.Thespermwhalesmademanymorea-codas
thani-codas,andthecodaswerefaster,meaningthetimebetweenclickswasshorter.
“Thespacingbetweeneachclickbecomesmuchshorter,"Grubersays.“Wecallit
theinter-clickinterval.”Theteamcouldevenpredictwhethershipswerenearbasedon
thewhales'clickpatterns.
Thefindingsareespeciallyrelevantnow,asunderwaternoisepollutionhasbeen
risingduetoincreasingindustrialandcommercialactivities.Shippingnoisehasdoubled
eachdecadesinceitwasfirstmeasuredin1960,accordingtothenonprofitOcean
