Consideroncologytreatment.Recentstudiesconductedonbothhumansandanimalssuggestthatacupuncturecanstrengthentheimmunesystemduringchemotherapyandreducethesideeffectsofnauseaandvomiting.Someanimalstudiessupporttheuseofelectroacupuncturetorelievecancerpain.Inaddition,researchhasexploredtheroleofacupunctureinstimulatingimmunefunction,includingincreasingbloodcellcountandenhancingtheactivityoflymphocytesandnaturalkillercells.3ArchaeologicaldiscoveriesshowthatacupunctureoriginatedinChinamillenniaago.ThefirstdetailedreportofacupunctureintheWestwasinthe1680sbyWillemtenRhijne,aDutchdoctor.Inthefirsthalfofthe19thcentury,therewasaflurryofinterestinacupunctureinbothAmericaandEurope.Anumberofarticlesappearedinscientificliterature,includinganeditorialarticleentitled“Acupuncturation”publishedinTheLancet.However,acupuncturedidnotattractwidespreadattentionintheUnitedStatesuntilthelatterpartofthe20thcenturywhenaU.S.journalistreportedthatacupuncturehelpedrelievehispost-operativepainafterheunderwentanemergencyappendectomyinChina.Amajormilestonewasreachedin1997,whenaNationalInstitutesofHealth(NIH)consensusstatementreportedthattherewaspositiveevidenceforacupuncture’seffectiveness.In2010,acupunctureandmoxibustionoftraditionalChinesemedicinewereinscribedontheRepresentativeListoftheIntangibleCulturalHeritageofHumanitybyUNESCO,furtherelevatingitsinternationalstatus.4
Overthecourseofitslonghistory,acupuncturehasincreasinglyintegratedscientificresearchtodevelopnewtechniquesandmethodstotreatpatients.Sincethe1950s,someChinesemedicalinstitutionshavebeguntointegrateacupunctureanesthesiaintosurgeries.ThesynthesisofTCMandbiomedicineallowsbothWesterndoctorsandTCMpractitionerstoenhancetreatmentandapproachpatientsinafarmorecomprehensiveandwhole-systemmanner.Anexcellentexampleisscalpacupuncture,whichfusestraditionalChineseacupuncturemethodswithWesternmedicalknowledgeofrepresentativeareasofthecerebralcortex.Ithastheabilitytoinfluencethecentralnervoussystemandmaythereforebenefitpeoplediagnosedwitharangeofneurologicalandrelateddisorders,includingstroke,aphasia,multiplesclerosis,Parkinson’sdisease,traumaticbraininjury,cerebralpalsy,phantomlimbpain,complexregionalpain,post-traumaticstressdisorder(PTSD),andspinalinjury.Forexample,ameta-analysisof16randomizedcontrolledtrialsshowedthatscalpacupuncturecombinedwithrehabilitationtherapyhasadvantagesinreducinglimbspasticity,improvinglimbfunction,andenhancingactivitiesofdailylivingamongpatientswithpost-strokespasticparalysis.5Besidesscalpacupuncture,othertypesofacupuncturethathaveemergedthroughintegrationwithmodernmedicineincludeelectroacupunctureandlaseracupuncture.Electroacupuncturecombinestraditionalacupuncturetechniqueswithgentleelectricalstimulation,deliveringelectricalpulsesthroughtheinsertedneedles.Thesepulsescanbeadjustedintermsof
