、8.1 New Words and Phrases,Chapter 6 Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems 6.8 Cruise control systems,Chapter 6 Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems 6.8 Cruise control systems,Today, cruise control systems are operated by ECUs. Cruise control systems consist of several common component

、s which include vehicle speed sensor, operator controls, control module, and throttle actuator. Vehicle Speed Sensor. It is usually mounted on the drive shaft. It sends a speed signal to the control module. The speed sensor may also send a signal to the engine control computer. Operator Controls. Th

、e operator controls are used to set the desired speed. Control location varies between manufacturers, but is usually mounted on the turn signal lever. The operator can set the speed, and can also make minor adjustments to speed as necessary. Another operator control is the brake pedal release switch

、, usually mounted on the brake pedal bracket. When the driver presses on the brake pedal, the switch sends a signal to the cruise control module to disengage the cruise control.,6.8.2 Text,Chapter 6 Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems 6.8 Cruise control systems,Control Module. The control m

、odule processes the inputs from the controls and speed sensor and produces an output signal to the throttle actuator. Throttle Actuator. It opens and closes the vehicle throttle to maintain the operator set speed. Throttle actuators can be electric motors directly operated by the control module. In

、older vehicles, however, the throttle actuator is a vacuum diaphragm servo connected to a vacuum controller. Adaptive cruise control can automatically adjust the vehicle speed to the current traffic situation. The system has three main aims: Maintain a speed as set by the driver Adapt this speed and

、 maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front. Provide a warning if there is a risk of collision. The main components of adaptive cruise systems are shown in Figure 6-19.,Chapter 6 Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems 6.8 Cruise control systems,New Words,Figure 6-19 An adaptive cruise

、 system,Chapter 6 Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems 6.8 Cruise control systems,The operation of an adaptive cruise control system (ACCS) is the same as a conventional system except when a signal from the headway sensor detects an obstruction, in which case the vehicle speed is decreased.

、If the optimum stopping distance cannot be achieved by just backing off the throttle, a warning is supplied to the driver. A more complex system can also take control of the vehicle transmission and brakes but this, while very promising, is further behind in development. It is important to note that

、 adaptive cruise control is designed to relieve the burden on the driver, not take full control of the vehicle!,Chapter 6 Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems 6.9 Anti Theft Systems,6.9.1 New Words and Phrases,Chapter 6 Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems 6.9 Anti Theft Systems,New

、nlock all doors, boot lid/tailgate and fuel filler door. Central locking systems are divided into electric and electric-pneumatic system. Electric central locking system uses electric actuators-door lock motors (Figure 6-20)or solenoids. In the electric-pneumatic central locking system, locking and

、unlocking the doors is performed by electric-pneumatic actuators (Figure 6-21) which are supplied with vacuum or pressure by a dual-pressure pump (contained in a pneumatic control unit). The components of the electric and electric-pneumatic central locking systems are shown in Figure 6-22 and Figure

、nging the engine into operation. This system consists of a control unit and, depending on the manufacture, either a handheld transmitter or a transponder. The transponder can be integrated in a electronic key or chipcard. System overview of immobilizer is given in Figure 6-24. Part location of a com

Aalarm system An alarm system triggers optical and acoustic warning signals in the event of unauthorized intervention or impact. The system will be triggered by: unauthorised opening of doors, boot lid, tailgate
