Soon a computer will be able to teach you English, if you really want to learn the language. Youll sit in front of
12、a television screen and practice endless structures. The computer will tell you when you are correct and when you are wrong. It will even talk to you because the silicon chips can change electrical impulses into sounds. And clever programmers can predict the responses you, the learner, are likely to
13、 make.So think of it. You will be able to teach yourself at your own pace. You will waste very little time, and you can work at home. And if after all that, you still cant speak English you can always use the translating machine. In a few years, therefore, perhaps there will be no need for BBC Moder
14、n English, or BBC English by Radio programsno more textbooks or teachers of English. Instead of buying an exciting new textbook, the computer will ask you to replace it with microprocessor one thousand nine hundred and eighty-four. Fast, reliable and efficient language learning and translating facil

23、f time to myself?” There was a woman in the shop and a man standing with his back half turned towards the counter. The woman was Maureen, he didnt recollect ever having seen her before, but there was something vaguely familiar about the way the man was standing. It reminded him of the bare white-was
24、hed walls of St. Matthews Hospital and Sam Lewis standing with his back towards Eddie staring out of the window.26. Mr. Phanourkis shook his head. “No,” he said, “:the only person Ive met so
31、 far is my table companion. He must be French. His name is Bonapetitor something like that.” “That is not his name, said the officer. “It is a French expression that means Good appetite”. At dinner time he found the Frenchman already at the table. He smiled shyly, sat down, and said carefully, “Bon
