Rhythm is expressed in alternation with regulation. It is however a large and inclusive word. In English poetry, meter is instead used. Mete

It is ordinarily built up out of a regular reoccurrence of stresses. “Meter divides itself into regular groups with approximately equal number of syllables and time intervals marked by stresses, of which the basic rhythm is composed.”(WangBaotong: 176) The metric

40、al pattern is measured mainly by two units, foot and verse. Poetry runs upon foot, which is a cluster of syllables arranged after a certain pattern and repeated to give steady rhythm to a poem. There are four basic rhythmic foot patterns in the English poetry, iambus, trochee, dactyl and anapest. A

41、Psalm of Life fits the trochaic foot pattern.The trochee is a disyllabic foot containing a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one. Look at the first two lines in A Psalm of Life:Tell me not, in mournful numbers,- - - - “Life is but an empty dream !”- - - -The obvious rhythmic pattern is a s

There are altogether nine stanzas in this poem and the trochaic pattern runs nearly throughout.According to the length of the verse, English poetry can be divided into short lines (the monometer, the diameter, and the t rimeter), long lines (the heptameter, the oct

A large body of English poetry has been composed in this form, as well as Longfellows A Psalm of Life in which each line has four

44、feet:Tell me| not, in| mournful| numbers,“Life is| but an | empty | dream !”Combined the foot and verse together, the whole poem employs a trochaic tetrameter metrical pattern. Such pattern used to compose A Psalm of Life has certain reasons. The trochee is most suited for cheerful themes and can be

45、 very emphatic in expression. A Psalm of Life does write to cheer people up; therefore, the contents and the form employed bring out the best in each other. However, perfectly regular metrical verse often sounds dull to read.” It is clear that regularity in the sense of each foot being exactly like

46、the next and each line being exactly like the next would not be a merit but a defect in poetry. ” (Wang Baotong: 281) Deviation demands more skills and sensitivity than to repeat the lines in the monotonous movement. Though the principal metrical pattern of A Psalm of Life is the trochaic tetrameter

Take the third stanza to illustrate the mutations in meter: Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,- - - - Is our destined end or way? - - -But to act, that each tomorrow- - - - Find us farther than today- - - -The whole stanza fits mainly the metrical pattern of troch

48、aic tetrameter; the first and third lines are four perfect trochees following the “di - da” pattern, while the second and third lines vary. The second line in the form is an anapest followed by two iambic feet, or it can be considered as a pyrrhic added before the main trochaic pattern as for an ins

49、tance of variation. The fourth line differ other verses in that the last foot has only one stressed syllable and lacks one unstressed syllable. Such ending is called a line with final truncation or a catalectic line. Such neat changes in the meter pattern can be found everywhere in the poem, which m

50、akes the poem more lively. Besides metrical pattern, another way to add rhythmic effects to a poem is using rhyme. Poets always use words that rhyme in their verse, that is, they use the words ending with the same sound as another word or as each other. There are several types of rhymes. According t

51、o the position of the rhyming words, it is classified as end rhyme and internal rhyme. The latter includes alliteration, assonance, consonance, reverse and Para rhyme. Longfellow takes the end rhyme in A Psalm of Life. Every two lines end with the words rhyming to each other. For example, “numbers”

52、thymes with “slumbers”; “dream” rhymes with “seem”.According to the way in which the rhyme marches, there are mainly three rhyming schemes: running thyme, alternating rhyme and enclosing rhyme. Longfellow uses the alternating rhyme to compose his A Psalm of Life. During the nine stanzas of this poem
