2、ix aspects.In this translation project, the author excerpts some sections from the book “The Rough Guide to Crete”. It is one of the Rough Guides series. The Rough Guides series are the famous travel books in Britain, published by Rough Guides Ltd. (Rough Guides Ltd, also known as A Concise Guide to

The works of the series are a clean sweep of European cities, not only taking into account the needs of backpackers, but also concentrating the European culture for thousands of years. They are considered to be the best guide books for travelling around Europe, so they can ensure the a

4、uthority of the translated text. The topic significance:Chinese scholars have done a lot of significant research and discussion on the translation techniques and theoretical studies of tourism translation. These findings cover many aspects, such as the cultural thinking of tourism materials translat

5、ion (Zhang Ning, 2000), the guide language to tourism practitioners, one of the characteristics of translation studies (Chen Gang, 2002)and the study of the translation of tourist handbooks (Zeng Lisha, 2005). These studies attract peoples concern for the study of tourism translation, making it grad

6、ually get into the field of professional translation. In recent years, the discussion on the definition, the status and the standard of tourism translation (Lu Hefa, Zhou Jianbo, 2008), as well as taking tourist text translation as an example to explore the study of translation theory category expan

7、sion (Zeng Lisha, 2008), have theoretically tried to explore the system construction of tourism translation and research categories on the basis of the research on the early phenomenon.With the improvement of Chinese citizens disposable income and the transformation ofpeoples ideas, the Chinese peop

8、le begin to travel abroad. Since the 1990s, Chinas travelling overseas market has experienced the developing stage from visit tours to travelling abroad at ones own expense. The time is short, but it develops quickly. The development of outbound tourism provides a new challenge for tourism translati

9、on. The Chinese travel agencies and potential visitors are eager to understand the conditions and culture of the tourist destinations. At this point, it seems that tourism translation in China has not kept pace with the development of tourism both in time and translational level. The author has sele

10、cted some chapters of this book as the translation materials, with a view of having a more detailed understanding of the landscapes and customs of certain regions. Making use of this opportunity, the author can do the translation and research in the field of interest - English tourist guide so as to

11、 further improve my translation ability.Touristtext translation not only provides information for tourists, but also has many other characteristics, such as advertising and cultural transmission.Therefore, tourism translation should be effective transmission of cultural information, rather than the

12、equivalent transfer (WuYun,2004:21). By translating these texts, the author can not only improve my ability to translate, but also exercise the ability to properly deal with the cultural differences so as to make Chinese readers more effectively understand foreign conditions and customs, and can mak

13、e some contributions to cultural exchange and dissemination. The format of an informative text is often standard: a textbook, a technical report, an article in a newspaper or a periodical, a scientific paper, a thesis, minutes or agenda of a meeting (Newmark, 1988:40). The excerpted chapters are about the basic information of Crete travel, including transportation, accommodation, dining and local festivals, etc. It has strong practicality and purpose.Rough Guides” are a series of classic travel guidebooks. Their translation pr

15、ovides professional guidance to increasingly prosperous travel abroad and can help travel agencies to promote tourism projects, particularly can provide a wealth of information on travel destinations for the self-service travelers. Therefore, the study of these texts has certain practical significan

16、ce.Preparations for translation We know a translation work needs to be done, we should first be familiar with the content. After communicating with supervisor and determining the topic, the author begins to make preparations. By reading relevant books and through online searches, the author understa

17、nds the relevant information on Crete both in English and Chinese, then organizes and classifies it so as to grasp the information of the translation data with accuracy and in detail.Secondly, analyze the text structure and the language style.Finally, use all kinds of translation tools comprehensive

18、ly. Theoretical guidanceFrom the theoretical point of view itanalyses some of the characteristics of tourist guide in the text and language.
