Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell-a signal causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty. Communication, of course, doesnt need to be in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar for honey. So why shouldnt trees have ways of sending message? ( )26. It can be concluded from the passage that caterpillars do not feed on leaves that _. A. are lying on the ground B. have an unpleasant taste C. bees dont like D. have an unfamiliar shape ( )27. The willow tree described in the passage protected itself by _. A. changing its leaf smell B. communicating with birds and bees C. changing its leaf chemistry D. shaking caterpillars off ( )28. According to this passage, bees communicate by _. A. making special movement B. touching one another C. smelling one another D. making unusual sound ( )29. The author believes that the incident described in the passage _. A. cannot be taken seriously B. should no longer be permitted C. must be checked more thoroughly D. seems completely reasonable B Today, ultrasonic(超声的) waves are being put to work in laboratories and factories. If an ultrasound generator is placed in a liquid, the waves move the liquid back and forth hundreds of thousands of times each second. This causes materials to mix quickly or to dissolve(使分解,使 溶解) in liquids. Paint manufacturers(制造商) use ultrasound to do a better job of blending colors. The companies that make film for your camera find that mixing chemicals by the use of sound waves will produce a more sensitive film. The new lightweight(轻量的) type of washing machine uses ultrasonic waves to get clothes clean. 第 3 页 共 8 页 Its special ultrasound generator is put into a pail of soapy water containing the soiled clothes. The sound waves drive the soapy water back and forth through the cloth so fast that everything is soon clean. There is also a new kind of dishwasher that works in much the same way. Ultrasonic waves can shake a liquid so fast that tiny holes form all through it. The liquid is actually torn apart by this action. Almost as soon as these holes are made, they fall together again. The result is a powerful pounding action. In the dairy industry this is used for the double purpose of making homogenized(使均匀,使匀质) milk and sterilizing(使无菌) it at the same time. If you look at some raw milk with a microscope, you find that it is made up of little drops of butter fat floating around in a watery liquid. In order to make milk easier to digest, these fat droplets(微粒) may be broken up by forcing the milk through very small openings. The result is called homogenized milk. When the ultrasonic method is used, the sound waves not only break up the droplets but also kill the germs in the milk by pounding them to pieces. ( )30. Why does a paint manufacturer use ultrasound to do a better job of blending colors? A. Because it is cheap to use ultrasound to blend colors. B. Because the waves move the liquid so quickly that it can make materials mix quickly or dissolve in liquids. C. Because they can mix chemicals by the use of sound waves. D. Because the waves can clean the paint. ( )31. What properties does ultrasound wave have? A. Homogenizes and sterilizes the milk. B. Mix materials and break droplets. C. Kill germs and sterilize milk. D. Move liquids quickly. ( )32. What exists in the raw milk? A. Little drops of butter fat. B. Small holes. C. Fat droplets and germs. D. Chemicals. ( )33. Where is ultrasound wave not used? A. In the paint manufacture. B. In the shop mixing bread flour. C. In the film-making company. D. In the dairy industry. C On the evening of June 21, 1992, a tall man with brown hair and blue eyes entered the beautiful hall of the Bell Tower Hotel in Xian with his bicycle. The hotel workers received him and telephoned the manager, for they had never seen a bicycle in the hotel ball before though they lived in “the kingdom of bicycles.” Robert Friedlander, an American, arrived in Xian on his bicycle trip across Asia which started last December in New Delhi, India. When he was 11, he read the book Marco Polo and made up his mind to visit the Silk Road. Now, after 44 years , he was on the Silk Road in Xian and his early dreams were coming true. Robert Friedlanders next destinations were Lanzhou, Dunhuang, Urumqi, etc. He will complete his trip in Pakistan. ( )34. The best headline for this newspaper article would be . A. A. clever B. friendly C. hardworking D. strongminded D The world economy has run into a brick wall. Despite countless warnings in recent years about the need to address a looming(逼近) hunger crisis in poor countries and a looming energy crisis worldwide, world leaders failed to think ahead. The result is a global food crisis. Wheat, corn and rice prices increases combined with soaring energy costs will slow if not stop economic growth in many parts of the world and will even undermine(破坏)political stability, as evidenced by the protest riots that have erupted in places like Haiti, Bangladesh and Burkina Faso. Practical solutions to these growing woes do exist, but well have to start thinking ahead and acting globally. So, what should be done? Here are three steps to ease the current crisis and avert(防止, 避免) the potential for a global disaster. The first is to scale-up(按比例增加,扩大) the dramatic success of Malawi, a famine-prone(遭遇饥荒) country in southern Africa, which three years ago established a special fund to help its farmers get fertilizer and high-yield seeds. Malawis harvest doubled after just one year. An international fund based on the Malawi model would cost a mere $10 per person annually in the rich world, or $10 billion in all. Second, the U.S. and Europe should abandon their policies of subsidizing(给补助金) the conversion of food into biofuels(生物燃料). Third, we urgently need to weatherproof(使防风雨) the worlds crops as soon and as effectively as possible. For a poor farmer, sometimes something as simple as a farm pond-which collects rainwater to be used for emergency irrigation in a dry spell-can make the difference between a bountiful crop and a famine. The world has already committed to establishing a Climate Adaptation Fund to help poor regions climate-proof vital economic activities such as food production and health care but has not yet acted upon the promise. The food crisis provides not only a warning but also an opportunity. We need to invest vastly more in sustainable development in order to achieve true global security and economic growth. ( )37. Which of the following is the best title? A. How to end the global food shortage B. How to end the global disaster C. How to help the farmers in the poor countries D. How to subsidize the farmers to increase food products ( )38. The word “woes” in paragraph one is most likely to mean . A. hunger B. things C. matters D. disasters ( )39. What does the author think of the global food shortage? A. people in the world can do nothing. B. The global food crisis will continue. C. The food crisis provides not only a warning but also an opportunity. D. We don know. ( )40. What measures should be taken to ease the current crisis and avert the potential for a global disaster? A. to scale-up the dramatic success of Malawi B. the U.S. and Europe should abandon their policies of subsidizing the conversion of food into biofuels C. to prevent the worlds crops from being destroyed by weather as soon and as effectively as possible.
