It included Portraits of Grief, the biographical sketches of the lives of 1,800 of nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks. The Pulitzer board said the section coherently and comprehensively covered the tragic events, profiled the victims and tracked the developing story, locally and globally.2 INTERNATIONAL REPORTING BARRY BEARAKThe New York Times As co-bureau chief in New Delhi, Mr. Bearak traveled extensively in Afghanistan during and after thereign of the Taliban, producing what the Pulitzer committee described as deeply affecting and illuminating coverage of ordinary people struggling to endure famine, extremism and war. Afghanistan is the worlds most beautiful and the worlds saddest place, and I only hope some good will come to the people after all these years of intense suffering, Mr. Bearak said.3 BEATREPORTINGGRETCHEN MORGENSONThe New York Times Ms. Morgenson, a stockbroker turned journalist, exposed the hidden conflicts of interest that abound among stock analysts. Her articles illuminated a culture in which analysts spent less time on research and more time promoting stocks of companies that did business with their firms. Last year, she was the only reporter to also look at stockbrokers who advised the employees of companies like Microsoft and World com to make risky bets on stock options. Individual investors were driven like sheep to the slaughter by analysts looking to line their own pockets, she said. Ms.Morgenson, 46, joined The Times in 1998 and has been a business reporter for more than 18 years.4 EXPLANATORYREPORTING THE NEW YORK TIMESIn the three-part series Holy Warriors, The Times wrote of a Saudi millionaire whose camps in Afghanistan were molding thousands of militant Muslims into an international network of terrorists waiting only for their orders to strike. The series was published in January 2001. Eight months later, the newspapers editors wrote to the Pulitzer jury, it all turned horribly real. Their work was cited by the Pulitzer judges as part of the newspapers informed and detailed reporting, before and after the Sept.11 attacks on America, that profiled the global terrorism network and the threats it posed. FINALISTS- David Finkel of The Washington Post for his illuminating series of articles on the lives and journeys of international migrants, and The New York Times staff for its sustained explanatory reporting on the nature of the structural damage at ground zero.5 COMMENTARYTHOMASL. FRIEDMANThe New York Times Mr. Friedman, 48, foreign affairs columnist for The Times, won his third Pulitzer Prize, for his columns examining the world wide impact of the terrorist threat. The Pulitzer board cited his clarity of vision, based on extensive reporting. This is the biggest story of my life, and the thing that motivated me most was I just really wanted to get it right, Mr. Friedman said. Get it right not only in terms of who they are but in terms of who weare. He shared the Pulitzer for international reporting in1983 for his work in Lebanon and won again in 1988 for his coverage of Israel.
