文档简介

Personal Statement Compared to my peers, I was exposed to the mystery of computer very early. Before I began my study in the preliminary school, I was sent to a night school to attend a course about the computer. There I learned about the DOS system and 3.5 inch soft disk. When I began my first year in the middle school, my family bought the first computer- a 586(windows 98) for me and thats when my interests in computer systems and software first started to grow. From that time on, I have always been fascinated by the mysterious nature of science, especially math and physics. Therefore after I finished my middle school, I chose a university which is very strong in science and engineering- - Zhejiang University. However, my marks didnt allow me to choose my favorite major Electric Automation. Instead, I was designated to the college of foreign language studies, learning English. But I didnt give up. I was able to keep my excellent performance in English study (being awarded as the Outstanding students in Academy, Morality and PE in 2004-2005) while taking a lot of other classes related to electrical and computer engineering such as Digital Circuit, Analog Ciucuit, Programming Language VB and C; Web designing software Frontpage and so on. I was really busting my ass off studying. I was so determined to show that I deserved better that I even lost lots of my hair which is caused by a slight nerve breakdown. But that didnt stop me either. Meanwhile, I was also very active in non-academic areas. I won the Award of Merit in the 9th FLTRP Cup English Debating contest in 2004; I was chosen to represent our university to take part in the 2005 Shakespeare Festival (a stage opera contest) hosted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong; I won the second place in the Foreign Songs Singing Competition at our university in 2005; I joined the volunteer group in our college and did a lot of volunteer work during my first two years in college, including doing translation at the World Leisure EXPO hosted by the city of Hangzhou in 2006. After graduation, I stayed at the university, working for its Education Foundation. By that time, I had never thought about going back to school, let alone taking on an engineering management career. However, thanks to this job, I was able to realize my weaknesses and rediscovered the motivation to pursue my dreams. As a secretary, my job at the university was to collect data, store and analyze it in order to keep track with the donors and find potential donors for the foundation. But as the development of foundations for Institutes of higher education are still at its early stages in china, we have no software support at all. My job was really hard for me because I could only rely on information from the internet and do all the analysis myself. Besides, I was also in charge of the website. When I was there, we were planning to build a new website and the task naturally falls onto me. I have to write down all our demands and communicate with the engineers from ICinfo Co.(a company specializes in designing websites) . To accomplish that, I learned HTML and CSS using the library and internet videos. Though the website now still has a lot of problems, this experience surely helped deepen my understanding of Web design and it also lit a fire in my heart. Suddenly, my passion about computer engineering roared back into my life. In todays world, information has become the most important resource every country and every man competes for. The development of information technology has changed the world mightily and will definitely continue to be a huge factor in the foreseeable future. Put simply, it has totally changed the way people live their lives. Standing at the front of this tide is computer and network, their combined impact on todays world is absolutely amazing. They have become the ultimate representation of information technology. Thats why I decided at that time that computer engineer is going to be my future career. It has got a bright future. I resigned my first job which in a lot of peoples eyes is a very promising and stable job and came to Xiamen University to take on the rising major-cloud computing. During my study here, I took library as my “dorm” and began to read books, a lot of books, and all original versions about the computer basics and programming languages like Java and Objective C. In my spare time, I helped at my teachers lab and took part in some small projects as well. Though I didnt shoulder much responsibility because of my limited knowledge in programming, its still a very important experience for me. I learned a lot about how projects and designs are carried out. Individual skills are very important, so is teamwork. In order to complete your project, you need lots of other things besides skills, such as progress timetable, share of workload, short-term goals, long-term goals, definition of different roles, distribution of resources and so on. In todays world, the gap between different disciplines is widening and thus the social division of labor. As the human activity of changing the world becomes more and more complex, the need for sustainable development heightens, and we begin to concentrate more on the reasonable distribution of resources as well as the improvement of working efficiencies. We need more cross-discipline talents than any time before because the era of hero has gone. No one can achieve big things without cooperating with others, Those years of working and coming back to school not only gave me a lot of knowledge, but also showed me that I am still not anywhere close to my goal. I want to become an expert in my area. Thats when I decided to go abroad to further my study. Why America? Because it is both the birth place of computer and a lot of great geniuses like Bill Gates whose contribution to the world and human kind are truly unprecedented. You cant find a better place to learn about computer. Thats when I learned about the project about FIU. But through listening to recommendations by my tutor and those whove studied there, browsing FIUs website about introduction of the available disciplines, I decided to choose engineering management(with CE as my sub-direction) as my major instead CE. Why? Because I believe this major is the best match with my comprehensive background of English, Electric Automation and Cloud computing. Only learning CE wont allow me to fully take advantage of my background. I am very glad to know that FIU is one of the biggest public research universities in Florida and has a very strong faculty and a great learning atmosphere. It is very popular among Chinese students. The university locates at one of the most beautiful beach cities-Miami. The weather there is great, so is the transportation. That is definitely a plus for the university. Though FIUs strongest majors are international business and hotel management, but as a comprehensive university, its engineering department is definitely not to be overlooked. Steve Jo
