共和党人因移民儿童谴责奥巴马 This year,52,000 children have entered the UnitedStates from Mexico without a family member orguardian. The childr en are mainly from Guatemala,El Salvador and Honduras. U.S. border patrolagents detain most of the boys and girls. Normally, Mexican citizens who are caught are quickly r eturned to Mexico. People from othercountries are processed through the immigration court system. By law, children cannot be sent back alone. They must b e processed through the Office ofRefugee Resettlement or pu t under the care of family members living in the United Sta tes. Shawn Moran is Vice President of the National Border Pa trol Council. He describes what U.S.agents have seen recent ly along the Rio Grande River border with Mexico. “Most time people that are crossing the border illegall y attempt to evade Border Patrol. But inthese cases, Border Patrol agents are being actively sought out. People (the c hildren) arewaiting in very conspicuous places to be appreh ended by the Border Patrol.“ Michael McCaul is a member of both the Republican Party and the U.S. House ofRepresentatives. He is the Chairman o f the House Homeland Security Committee. He says theObama a dministration should have predicted the large numbers of un accompanied children. “The tragic fact is these children are making a dangerou s journey based on misinformation andthe false promise of a mnesty.“ Congressman McCaul says areas along the Mexico border - - like his home state of Texas - areunable to deal with so many children. He wants Presiden t Obama to take action. “States should not need to protect what is in the feder al governments role under ourConstitution.“ The Obama administration rejected putting National Guar ds troops along the border. Lastweek, the administration al so announced plans to open more detention centers to house thechildren. Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson belongs to Mr. Obamas Democratic Party. Mr.Thompson rejected the blame fr om Republicans. “It is irresponsible to attribute this crisis to one U.S. policy, or for that matter to one U.S.president.“ Some Republican lawmakers have called for more fences a nd tougher security along theborder. Republican Congressman Mike Rogers represents Alabama. He says the crisis isavoid able. “I have been there. I know what I am talking about. And we dont have a fence down there,and if we did, we would not have five-year-old children coming across.“ Tristan Reed is a Mexico security expert. He says the d rug trade is largely to blame for peopleleaving Central Ame rica. “They are escaping from legitimate drug wars that are go ing on in their cities and municipalities.“ He says poverty also influenced the decision of many pa rents to send their children to theUnited States. Jeh Johnson is the head of the Department of Homeland Secur ity. He calls the migration ofCentral American children a h umanitarian crisis. “We are talking about large numbers of children, withou t their parents, who have arrived at ourborder, hungry, thi rsty, exhausted, scared and vulnerable. How we treat the ch ildren, inparticular, is a reflection of our laws and our v alues.“ He adds that the U.S. government is required by law to p rovide care for the children.
