T: Well, class, look at the picture. (show the picture to the students) T: Can you tell me what this is? S: The Newspaper of 21st Century. T: Right. Do you know something about it? Sl: Its a newspaper and its written in English. There is a lot of pictures, news, and other sections,etc. S2: It is especially for us students and I think its a great help to us. We can read a lot of information and other countries cultures or customs from it. It can also improve our reading ability if you often read something from it. T: Very good. Of course, its very useful, and I hope you can have one in-the future because it really can help us a lot. And you know the 21st Century is a popular paper among teenagers in China. Moreover, if you have any problem, you can write to the editor and ask for advice. Now were going to read a letter to the editor of the 21st Century from a student. Well, before reading, first look at the teaching aims of this class. (write the teaching aims on the blackboard) Teaching aims: 1. Enable students to express their feelings and to help others. 2. Help students write a composition about a friend they know by giving some hints to the students. Step II Listening T: Now class, listen to the tape and answer one question: whats the problem with Xiaodong? (play the tape twice) S: Hes not very good at communicating with people, so he feels quite lonely sometimes. Now he doesnt know how to deal with it. Step Writing T: Good. Now suppose you are the editor and you should help Xiaodong out of this kind of situation. So now write a letter to him to give him some advice. And I give you some points to help you:(l) Make an effort to change the situation. (2) Start talking to people about what you both like. (3)Join in peoples discussion. (4) Show your interest in their talk. (5) Try to make friends with one or two classmates. T: Well, I give you twenty-five minutes to write it. After writing I will let some of you read your letter to the others and lets see what good advice you have offered to Xiaodong. Now you can begin writing. (at this time the teacher can write an sample writing on the blackboard as follows) Sample writing: Dear Xiaodong: Some people like talking with others, but some people are shy. If you fall into the second group, it can be hard to make friends. But you can change the situation. What are you interested in? If you like basketball, for example, you could talk with some of your classmates who like basketball. The easiest way to start talking to people is to find something you have in common. If you are standing beside a group of your classmates, join in their discussion if you know something about the subject they are discussing. But if you dont, you shouldnt feel afraid to say, for example, “That sounds interesting, what is it about?“ Once you start talking to one person, it will get easier to talk to others. Find one person you become friends with him, have something in common with, once you become friends with him, his friends will start talking to you too. Good luck ! (twenty-five minutes later) T: Time is up. Who can read what you wrote just now to the others. S1: (the teacher should value the students writing and correct some mistakes if any) T: Now lets look through the sample writing. First pay attention to its form. This is a letter. Then look at the first paragraph. In this paragraph, the editor pointed out two situations and also referred to Xiaodongs and gave him a piece of advice. In the second paragraph, the editor advised Xiaodong should talk to other people about what he is interested in and this is a good start. In the third paragraph, the editor suggested being brave to join a group in their discussion even he doesnt know about the subject. Finally, the
