语篇提能阅读理解ATsunami (海啸) is Japanese for“harbor wave”. They are destructive(破坏的)giant waves that have enough energy to damage towns to pieces on the coast. The most common cause of tsunamis is when the seafloor buckles(弯曲)because of an undersea earthquake.Tsunami can travel at speed up to 600 miles per hour in the open sea.The ones that usually do the most damage are usually 9 to 10 feet high. Its not just one wave that comes. They might continue for several hours with several hours between each wave.A tsunami with waves that reached up to 32 feet high, hit more than nine different Asian countries, including Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and Indonesia, in late December, 2004.Sri Lanka was the worst hit with about 1.5 million people moved from their homes.Officials estimate(估计)that more than 100,000 people have been killed.Aid groups like the Red Cross are asking for donations(捐赠)of money to help those in the affected areas(灾区)In the Pacific, there were 17 tsunamis during 1992 to 1996 that took about 1,700 lives. The most deadly tsunami in history happened after the Krakatoa Volcano erupted(喷发)in 1883, in Indonesia. About 36,000 people died from the eruption, most of them from the following tsunamis. Hawaii has seen 13 large tsunamis, mostly from earthquakes along the edge of the Pacific Ocean. There was a 55foot wave on the Big Island and a 54foot wave on Molokai in 1946, followed by a 53foot wave in Kauai in 1957.The last tsunami that affected the whole Pacific Ocean happened in 1964 in Alaska when an earthquake happened in Prince William Sound. It made four huge waves that destroyed towns and cities as far as Crescent City, California. The waves reached 20 feet high and traveled at 500 miles per hour. The earthquake, which was rated 8.4 on the Richter scale, caused in total 120 deaths.1The most common cause of tsunami is_.Awaves Bseafloor buckingCearthquakes Dvolcano eruptions2Tsunamis that cause damage usually are at least_high, racing along at speed up to_.A32 feet; 600 miles per hourB9 to 10 feet; 600 miles per hourC55 feet; 500 miles per hourD20 feet; 500 miles per hour3The tsunami that happened in late December 2004_.Awas the most damaging one with the highest wavesBkilled more than 1.5 million peopleChit more than nine countries in AsiaDwas caused by the Krakatoa volcano eruption4Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?ADuring 1992 to 1996, there were 17 tsunamis all over the world.BAlong the edge of the Pacific Ocean, there were 13 earthquakes every year.CIn 1964, a tsunami caused by an earthquake happened in Alaska.DThe tsunami in 1964 killed over 120 people. CBWhile researching one of the books, I came across a story of an 11yearold Dutch boy who had climbed up on top of a life raft(救生筏) after his ship was attacked in 1942. The raft drifted off(漂走) into the night and was never seen again. I was taken by the story of the event and thought about the possibility of using it in a novel later on.Over the next ten years, 1957 to 1967, the boy on the raft was never far away from my mind. Finally, I decided to bring that boy back to life from the dead. I thought the key to the story might be the “rescuer” hopefully someone who knew the Caribbean Sea, whod sailed it for a long time. This man came to me in the form of an old black man named Robert, who couldnt read or write, yet he was one of the wisest men Id ever talked to. He became “Timothy” of The Cay. He knew more about the Caribbean than anyone Id been around.I didnt know any Dutch boys and refuse to write about people or places that I dont know about. So I came up with Phillip, a boy with whom Id played from about the age of five until I was ten. Mostly, I remembered Phillip for one thing his deep anger and distrust of black people. So I thought it would be an interesting situation if I placed the prejudiced(有偏见的) Phillip on that life raft with a black man upon whom his very life would depend. Then I blinded Phillip purposely, hoping hed be colorblind before the story was over; hoping hed learn something about the tragedy of racial prejudice.5What happened to the Dutch boy?AHe was lost at sea on a raft.BHe was rescued by the author.CHe was attacked by a black man.DHe made a raft to sail the Caribbean.6Who was the model of Timothy in The Cay?AThe author. BThe Dutch boy.CRobert. DPhillip.7We can learn from the text that Phillip _.Awas a blind manBwas a very interesting manCknew the Caribbean very wellDwas the authors childhood friend8The text is mainly about _.Aa Dutch boyBa trip to the CaribbeanChow the author came to write The CayDwhy it took the author so lo
