together a 700year record of the rainy seasons, which is expected to provide guidance for experts making weather predictions.Every year, moist (潮湿的)air masses, known as monsoon, produce large amounts of rainfall in India,East Asia,Northern Australia and East Africa. All this wet air is pulled in by a high pressure area over the Indian Ocean and a low pressure area to the south.According to Edward Cook,a weather expert at Columbia University in New York, the complex nature of the climate systems across Asia makes monsoons hard to predict. In addition, climate records for the area are too recent and not detailed enough to be of much use. Therefore,he and a team of researchers spent more than fifteen years traveling across Asia, looking for trees old enough to provide longterm records. They measured the rings,or circles, inside thousands of ancient trees in more than 300 places.Rainfall has a direct link to the growth and width of rings on some kinds of trees. The researchers developed a document they are calling a Monsoon Asia Drought Atlas. It shows the effect of monsoons over seven centuries, beginning in the 1300s.Professor Cook says the treering records show periods of wet and dry weather.“If the monsoon basically fails or is a very weak one,the trees affected by monsoons at that location might put on a very narrow ring. But if the monsoon is very strong, the trees affected by that monsoon might put on a wide ring for that year. So,the wide and narrow ring widths of the chronology that we developed in Asia provide us with a measure of monsoon variability.” With all this information, researchers say they can begin to improve computer climate models for predicting the behavior of monsoons.“There has been widespread famine and starvation and human dying in the past in large droughts. And on the other hand,if the monsoon is particularly heavy,it can cause extensive flooding,” said Eugene Wahl,a scientist with Americas National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.“So,to get a sense of what the regional moisture patterns have been, dryness and wetness over such a long period of time in great detail,I would call it a kind of victory for climate science.”64Whats the passage mainly about?AThe effects of Asian monsoons.BThe necessity of weather forecast.CThe achievements of Edward Cook.DA breakthrough in monsoon prediction.65It is difficult for experts to predict Asian monsoons because_.Ait is hard to keep longterm climate recordsBthey are formed under complex climate systemsCthey influence many nationsDthere is heavy rainfall in Asia66What can be inferred from the passage?ALong and detailed climate records can offer useful information for monsoon research.BThe Monsoon Asia Drought Atlas has a monsoon record for about 1,300 years.CThe trees affected by monsoon grow fast if the monsoon is weak.DThe rainfall might be low although the monsoon is strong in monsoonaffected areas.67What do we know about the research according to Eugene Wahl?AIt is a great achievement in climate science.BIt should include information about human life in the past.CIt has analyzed moisture models worldwide.DIt will help people prevent droughts and floods.DWe bet that on cold wintry days, many of you love to stay in your warm home and, every now and then, come out into the kitchen for a snack.Unfortunately, plenty of creepycrawly critters(爬行生物) like to do the same thing!Winter is the time when bugs(虫子) invade your house without an invitation. The season can be tough for such creatures. In winter the air is cold, the ground is hard and many trees have no leaves. So bugs do what they have to do to survive.Monarch butterflies head south to warmer climates.Ants crowd in deep underground colonies and eat food they have been storing all year. Many insects go into a deep sleep called diapauses.Therere different kinds of diapauses, but all are similar to hibernation,a time when bigger animals become inactive in the cold.Insects go into an inactive period, too, but it often isnt when the temperature drops. They rely on more dependable signals in the environment. For example, many insects can tell how much sunlight theres each day. They use that to tell themselves when to shut down.Bugs are coldblooded, meaning that their inside temperature is the same as the outside. They cant move much when it gets below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. So they search for any warm place.Theyre looking for protection. These guys have been doing this for 300 million years,so they dont really know theyre coming into your house. The home is a recent event in terms of their evolutionary behavior. They enter through tiny cracks or come in unnoticed on your clothes or shoes.Remember that they may be invading your homes for warmth and food, but they dont care about humans.68What is the purpose of the first paragraph?ATo point out that humans like to stay at home in winter.BTo mean that humans and bugs have the same living habits.CTo mean that bugs will invade humans houses for their winter.DTo put forward the idea that bugs are not welcome in winter.69According to the text, what is diapauses?AIt is the same as the animals hibernation.BIt often appears in warm areas all the year.CIt is done to keep bugs active in winter.DIt is a deep sleep similar to hibernation.70What often decides bugs diapauses?AThe lower local temperature.BThe amount of sunlight.CKinds of environmental signals.DThe insects inside temperature.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。When I was a kid my parents sent me to a summer camp in New mountain, you know its a physical challenge, especially when youre carrying your food and shelter on your back._72_“How much farther is it?”“My pack is too heavy. Can you carry it for me?”The reply of the teachers was,“Suck it up.” The truth is,the complaining campers were nowhere near
