Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesnt matter whether the words come from someone else or ourselves the positive (good) and negative (bad) effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. Were usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldnt be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This “selftalk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of selftalk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We_should_also_be_quick_to_give_ourselves_a_pat_on_the_back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be angry.Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesnt pass this test, then its better left unsaid.Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build selfrespect and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.1There is no need for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because _.A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselvesB. we can benefit from talking to ourselvesC. talking to ourselves always gives us courageD. it does no harm to have “selftalk” when we are alone答案与解析B根据第二段可知,自言自语对我们有好处。B项正确。2The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _.A. praise ourselves B. remind ourselvesC. relax ourselves D. free ourselves答案与解析A画线句子的前一句和后一句都表明,我们应该即时的表扬自己。A项正确。 西方人在表扬别人时,通常有一个拍受表扬的人的背的一个动作。3The author would probably hold the view that _.A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offersB. negative words may encourage us to make more progressC. people tend to remember friendly wordsD. it is better to think twice before talking to others答案与解析D从文章第一段和第四段内容可知,作者认为不当言语可以伤人。从第五、六段内容可知,D项表述正确。4Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Selftalk always has positive effects on us. B. We are fond of admitting talking to ourselves. C. Nice words help to build up ones confidence. D. The effect of good words lasts longer than bad words.答案与解析C从第三段第二句可知,A项错误;从第二段第二句可知,B项错误;第五段第一句指出说话有持续的影响,但并没有表明D项意思。C项可在最后一段中看出。C项正确。BLast week, my granddaughter started kindergarten, and I wished her every success. But part of me didnt. I actually wanted her to fail in some ways because I believe that failure can be good for our learning process. Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or doing something correctly the first time, which can often be a problematic (存在问题的) victory. Firsttime success is usually a fluke (侥幸). Firsttime failure, by contrast, is supposed to be the natural order of things. Failure is how we learn. In Africa they describe a good cook as “She who has broken many pots.” If youve spent enough time in the kitchen to have broken a lot of pots, probably you know a fair amount about cooking. I once had dinner with a group of cooks, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn scars. They knew how much credibility (可信) their failures gave them. I earn my living by writing a daily newspaper column. Each week I am aware that one column I write is going to be the worst column. I try my best every day. I have learned to cherish that column. A successful column usually means that I am discussing my familiar topic, writing in a style I am used to or saying the same things as anyone else but in a fancy way. My younger daughter is a trapeze artist. She spent three years putting together a show, and she did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change it but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored. And if she was bored, there was no point in subjecting (使服从于) her body to all that stress. She risked failure and great public embarrassment in order to feed her soul. My granddaughter is a perfectionist. She will feel her failures, and I will want to comfort her. But I will also, I hope, remind her of what she learned, and how she can do better next time. I hope I can tell her, though, that its not the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning. 5Why did the author want his granddaughter to fail?A. Success is boring though beneficial. B. She would learn more from failure. C. Its impossible to do everything successfully. D. He wanted her to be strong enough to face hardships. 答案与解析B从第一段第三句中“failure can be good for our learning process”和最后一句“Failure is how we learn. ”可知,B
