They feature winter sports held on snow or ice, such as Alpine skiing(阿尔卑斯山的), cross-country(越野的) skiing, ice skating, bobsledding(滑大雪 橇运动), and ice hockey(冰球). Each National Olympic Committee (NOC), as with the Summer Olympics, enters athletes to compete against other NOCs athletes for gold, silver, and bronze medals. Fewer countries participate in the Winter Olympics than the Summer Olympics, due largely to the reduced availability of winter sports in many countries nearer to the Equator, and where access to winter sport training facilities are quite limited or non-existent. Also areas in which the Winter Olympics are usually held, are required to be near a mountain range where it snows - for the Alpine skiing events. Outdoor natural snow is also a necessity for cross-country skiing. Words in the News n n stiff:stiff: difficult, strict, or severe n n a decisive margin:a decisive margin: Questions and Answers n4. The facility is often referred to as Guantnamo, or Gitmo (derived from the abbreviation “GTMO“). The detainees currently held as of June 2008 have been classified by the United States as “enemy combatants(战士).“ After claims were made that these detainees were not entitled to any of the protections of the Geneva Conventions, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld on June 29, 2006 that they were entitled to the minimal protections listed under its Common Article 3. Following this, on July 7, 2006, the Department of Defense issued an internal memo stating that prisoners will in the future be entitled to protection. The base is frequently referred to by its ICAO code, “GTMO.“ GTMO is commonly pronounced “Gitmo“ by military members, and this usage has entered the common lexicon. Words in the News n n detention facility:detention facility: 拘留所 n n reenactment reenactment 再制定, 再扮演 n n Berlin International Film Festival:Berlin International Film Festival: is one of the most important film festivals in Europe and the world. Doping is mostly done to improve athletic performance. This is why many sports ban the use of performance enhancing drugs. Another form of doping is blood doping, either by blood transfusion or use of the hormone erythropoietin(红细胞生成 素) (EPO). Doping is considered unethical by most international sports organizations and especially the International Olympic Committee. The reasons are mainly the health threat of performance-enhancing drugs, the equality of opportunity of the athletes and the exemplary ( 可做模范的) effect of “clean“ (doping-free) sports in the public. Words in the News n n Turin:Turin: 都灵is a major city as well as a business and cultural centre in northern Italy. n n contender:contender: someone or something that is in competition with other people or things. n n bar from doing.:bar from doing.: to officially prevent someone from entering a place or from doing something n n doping:doping: the practice of using drugs to improve performance in a sport. n n suspend:suspend: to make someone leave their school or job for a short time, especially because they have broken the rules. Multiple Choice n1.
