He had made a lot of money in trading with foreign countries. When he was seventy five, he gave $ 60,000 to the village school to buy land and equipment for a childrens ground. As a result of his kindness, he became famous. Many people came to visit him. Among them was a newspaperman. During their talk, Johnson remarked that he was seventy-five and expected to live to be hundred. The newspaperman asked him how he managed to be healthy at seventy-five. Johnson had a sense of humor. He liked whisky and drank some each day. “I have an injection (注射) in my neck each evening,” he told the newspaperman, thinking of his evening glass of whisky. The newspaperman did not understand what Johnson meant. In his newspaper he reported that Johnson was seventy-five and had daily injection in his neck. Within a week Johnson received thousands of letters from all over Britain, asking him for the secret of his daily injection.21. Johnson became a rich man through _. A. doing business B. making whisky C. cheating D. buying and selling land22. The gift of money to the school suggests that Johnson_.A. had no children. B. was a strange man. C. was kind-hearted and fond of children. D. wanted people to know how rich he was. 23. When Johnson said he had an injection in his neck each evening, he really meant that _.A. he liked drinking a glass of whisky in the evening B. he needed an injection in the neckC. a daily injecting in the evening would make him sleep well D. there was something wrong with his neck24. From the passage we can infer that Johnson would be very _ after he read those peoples letters. A. miserable B. glad C. surprised D. sadB Night after night, she came to pull the cover(被子) up around me and make me feel comfortable in bed, even long after my childhood years. Following her longstanding custom, she would lean down and push my long hair out of the way, then kiss my forehead. I dont remember when it first started annoying me her hands pushing my hair that way. But it did annoy me, for they felt work-worn and rough(粗糙)against my young skin. Finally, one night, I shouted out at her, “Dont do that any more your hands are too rough!” She didnt say anything in reply. But never again did my mother close out my day with that familiar expression of her love. Time after time, with the passing years, my thoughts returned to that night. By then I missed my mothers hands, missed her goodnight kiss on my forehead. Sometimes the incident seemed very close, sometimes far away. But always it remained in the back of my mind. Well, the years have passed, and Im not a little girl any more. Mom is in her mid-seventies, and those hands I once thought to be so rough are still doing things for me and my family. Shes been our doctor, reaching into a first aid kit(急救箱) for the remedy to calm a young girls stomach or soothe(缓解)the boys injured knee. She cooks the best fried chicken in the world. gets stains out of blue jeans like I never could. Now, my own children are grown and gone. Mom no longer has Dad, and on special occasions, I find myself drawn next door to spend the night with her. So it was late on Thanksgiving Eve, as I slept in the bedroom of my youth, a familiar hand hesitantly(犹豫地)ran across my face to brush (梳理)the hair from my forehead. Then a kiss, ever so gently, touched my brow. In my memory, for the thousandth time, I recalled the night my young voice complained, “Dont do that anymore your hands are too rough!” Catching Moms hand in hand, I blurted out how sorry I was for that night. I thought shed remember, as I did. But Mom didnt know what I was talking about. She had forgotten and forgiven long ago. That night, I fell asleep with a new appreciation for my gentle mother and her caring hands. And the guilt(内疚)that I had carried around for so long was nowhere to be found. 25. In the writers eyes, the familiar expression of mothers love could be _. A. standing beside her bed B. sleeping together with her C. brushing her hair with the rough hands D. spending the night with her 26. Looking back on the night she shouted at her mother, the writer felt _. A. disappointed B. regretful(后悔的) C. discouraged(气馁的) D. grateful 27. The phrase “blurted out” (Paragraph 3) probably means _. A. said suddenly without thinking much B. screamed at somebody in anger C. spoke in a loud voice rudely D. shouted to somebody cheerfully28. The best title for the passage can be _. A. Daughters Guilt B. Mothers Hands C. Better to Forgive and Forget D. Never too Late to Say SorryC It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obamas Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly(精彩地)written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar(说谎的人). And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they havent. In the World Book Days “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as Im not one to lie too often (Id hate to be caught out ), Ill admit here and now that I havent read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwells 1984. I think its really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I havent read him, but havent lied about it either) and Herman Melville. When they were asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more indepth! But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (Ill come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).29. How did the author find his friend a book liar? A. By judging his manner of speaking. B. By looking into his background. C. By mentioning a famous name. D. By discussing the book itself.30. By lying about reading, a person hopes to _. A. control the conversation B. appear knowledgeable C. learn about the book D. make more friends31. What is the authors attitude to 58% of readers? A. Favorable. B. Uncaring C. Doubtful D.
