my neighbor upon seeing the largest tomato plant known to mankind,or at least known in my neighborhood. One tiny 9inch plant, bought for 1.25 in the spring, has already taken over much of my rose bed, covering much of other plants, and is well on its way to the front door.Roses require a good deal of care, and if it werent for the pleasure they give,it wouldnt be worth the work.As it is,I have a garden full of sweetsmelling roses for most of the year.Bushes must be pruned(剪枝) in early spring, leaving ugly woody branches until the growth appears a few weeks later. It was the space available in the garden that led me into planting just one little tomato plant.A big mistake.Soil conditions made just perfect for roses turn out to be even more perfect for tomatoes. The daily watering coupled with full sun and regular fertilizing(施肥) have turned the little plant into a tall bush. The cage I placed around it as the plant grew has long since disappeared under the thick leaves. Now the task I face in harvesting the fruit is twofold:First,I have to find the red ones among the leaves, which means I almost have to stand on my head, and once found I have to reach down and under, pick the tomatoes and withdraw my full fist without dropping the_prize_so_dearly_won.I found two fullblown white roses completely hidden as I picked tomatoes in June, but they were weak and the leaves already yellow for lack of light. Here I am faced with a painful small decision:To tear up a wonderful and productive tomato plant that offers up between ten and twenty ripe sweet tomatoes each day or say goodbye to several expensive and treasured roses.Like Scarlett in Gone With the Wind,Ill think about that tomorrow.1What are the requirements for the healthy growth of roses?AA lot of care and the right soil.BFrequent pruning and fertilizing.CTomato plants grown alongside.DCages placed around the roots.2The writer planted the tomato because _.Ait cost only 1.25Bthe soil was just right for itCthere was room for it in the gardenDthe roses branches needed to be covered3This year the writers roses were _.Aremoved from the rose bedBpicked along with the tomatoesCmostly damaged by too much sunlightDlargely hidden under the tomato plant4By saying “the prize so dearly won” in Paragraph 5,the writer wants to _.Ashow the difficulty in picking the tomatoesBshow the hardship of growing the rosesCexpress her liking for the rosesDexpress her care for the tomatoes5In the situation described in the text, one good thing is that _.Athe roses cost the writer little moneyBthe writer has a daily harvest of tomatoesCsomeone will help the writer make the decisionDthe writer can now enjoy both the roses and tomatoesBIn painting, pointillism(点彩画法) is a style or school that uses small dots to create an image.Traditionally, the dots of paint are applied to the canvas(画布) in such a way that their colors blend visually to create a smooth impression. The style was founded on ideas about how colors mix and how our eyes interpret dots of color when they are close together.Pointillism was developed by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac in the 1880s.It was first called “divisionism”The name “pointillism” developed only later, and was intended to tease the style.Today “pointillism” is an accepted term for this style, and has no teasing meanings. Some people still use the term “divisionism” to refer to paintings similar to pointillism. While pointillism uses small dots to create the impression of form and structure, divisionism creates unique color impressions by using dots of different colors. In a typical pointillist painting, you might see a colorful landscape that appears to include a wide range of lively colors. If you look closely, you will see that this bright color is really made up of tiny dots of yellow, green, and blue.By changing the combination of dots of primary colors, pointillist painters can create the false impression that they are using many more colors than they are.Using the viewers eye and brain to mix the colors can create a brighter impression than just mixing colors that absorb light. So the greenish blue color you see is brighter and more vivid than the color that would have resulted if the painter had mixed yellow, green, and blue paint together. The white canvas between dots can add to this effect.Pictures in magazines and newspapers are printed in a method similar to pointillism.Small dots of only three or four colors are printed in such a way that they create the false impression of other colors printed on the page.Even photos are printed this way.Additionally, electronic screens like TVs use a similar technique.Screens display dots of red, blue, and green, and our eyes and brains understand these collections of dots as rich color images.Learning about pointillism is interesting from more than just an art historical point of view. The masters of pointillism created eyecatching masterpieces using this technique, but anyone can understand the basic concepts behind it.Because so many of our modern technologies rely on similar ideas to create the images we see around us,pointillism is an attractive subject.Children can learn about and practice pointillism in order to get handson experience that can help them to understand color mixing better.6What does the passage mainly talk about?AThe origin and influence of pointillism.BThe importance of pointillism in the art field.CTips on making an amazing pointillist painting.DRelationship between pointillism and divisionism.7The difference between pointillism and
