september 20/21, 2012 the bible and christianitythe bible and christianity names for god god the lord yahweh lord god the almighty father old testament: judaism tells about god and gods laws 39 books in old testament first five books called: pentateuch genesis (creation of world) exodus (exit from egypt) leviticus (gods given laws) numbers (census of people) deuteronomy (moses final words) old testament continued historical books: tell the history of the hebrew people from their entry into palestine around 1200 b.c. books: joshua, judges, samuel, kings, chronicles, ezra, nehemiah. poetical books: wisdom (in form of sayings/proverbs or songs) for everyday life. books: job, psalms, proverbs, ecclesiastes, song of solomon. prophetic books: people who act as the communication between god and humanity. books: amos, isaiah, jeremiah, daniel, ezekiel. original battle: good vs. evil god and lucifer: the story god created the angels (powerful guardians) to live in heaven. the most beautiful and trusted was named lucifer. lucifer realized his beauty and wanted to be as powerful as god. he was prideful. he convinced other angels to revolt against god. ultimately, lucifer and these angels were sent away from heaven. lucifer is now called devil, satan, beast, or the serpent (snake) and the angels who were sent away with him are now called demons. creation of man: the fall god created adam (first man) and eve (first woman) they were perfectly happy in the garden of eden god told them, you can eat anything, but just not the one fruit on the tree in the middle of the garden. (he gives them freedom to choose his way or the other way.) eve eats the fruit and gives it to adam. because they disobeyed god, they are forced to leave the garden and live separated from god. (sickness, death, pain, worry) all people are separated from god. garden of eden key words in old testament covenant: a promise between god and man. pray: communicate (talk) with god praise: speak well of. to honor. (praise god!) blessing: to ask gods favor for/to ask for protection. hebrews: gods chosen people group. faith: belief (confidence and trust) not based on proof miracle: an extraordinary event in the physical world that is so great that it must be from the supernatural world. (work of god) themes god chooses the poor, weak, ugly, young people in the world to be the leaders and perform miracles. god speaks to people, but people choose to listen or not listen. god makes covenants (promises) with his people. god chooses the weak to show his strength moses, a man who has a speech problem, is chosen by god to speak to the king and take the hebrews (gods people) out of egypt. jacob, the younger brother of esau, steals his fathers blessing (as he is dying), steals his brothers birthrite (land promised to the oldest son) and runs away. later, god uses him to be the father of israel. david, the youngest (and smallest) in the family, kills the giant, goliath, and then becomes a very strong king of israel. parting of the red sea god speaks to people, not all listen he speaks through. dreams (joseph) visions (jacob) whispers (burning bush and moses) people (prophets)- isaiah, jeremiah, jonah, ezekiel miracles (separates the red sea for his people to walk through) angels- messengers (jacob wrestles an angel) himself god makes covenants with people “i will be your god and you will be my people.” a life and death bond: instruction and blessing god and noah: the ark god and abraham: father of all nations god and jacob: father of israel god and david: great king and great country god and jesus (new testament). the last covenant. all people can belong to god. psalms: hymns (a song of joy or praise) “but as for me, how good it is to be near god! i have made the lord my shelter, and i will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.” psalm 73:28 (nearer to god- hymn) i prayed to the lord, and he answered me. he freed me from all my fears. those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy, no shadow of shame will darken their faces. in my desperation i prayed, and the lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles.” -psalm 34:4 -5 “in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.“ - psalm 16:11 “delight yourself in the lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” -psalms 37:4 proverbs (pieces of advice) “trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” proverbs 3: 5-6 here are six things god hates, and one more that he hates with a passion: eyes that are arrogant, a tongue that lies, hands that murder the innocent, a heart that has evil plans, feet that race down a wicked track, a mouth that lies under oath, a troublemaker in the family. proverbs 6:16-19 people may be right in their own eyes, but the lord examines their heart. proverbs 21:2 choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold. proverbs 22:1 if your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat. if they are thirsty, give them water to drink. you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads, and the lord will reward you. proverbs 25:21-22 greed causes fighting; trusting the lord leads to prosperity. proverbs 28:25 prophets jeremiah 29:11 for i know the plans i have for you, declares the lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. jeremiah 17:7 “but blessed is the man who trusts in the lord, whose confidence is in him. micah 7:7 but as for me, i watch in hope for the lord, i wait for god my savior; my god will hear me. new testament: the spread of christianity gospels: the life and death of jesus christ. books: matthew, mark, luke, john. acts of the apostles: the early actions, events, and miracles of jesus followers. book: acts. epistles: letters to the new christian churches around europe. books: romans, corinthians, galatians, ephesians, philippians, colossians, titus, james, john. revelation: a vision of the end of the world. gods ultimate triumph over death and pain. god finishes satan. the final judgement. key words: new testament salvation: rescued. saved from evil. eternal life: life after death in heaven. grace: undeserved forgiveness cross: a symbol of faith (belief) in jesus. scripture: the sacred writings of christianity. (bible) sin: an offense (to do wrong or fail to do right). life of jesus christ: son of god born into a poor family. (never rich, short, normal looking) received jewish education: reading, memorizing the old testament. at the age of 30, jesus started his “ministry” (the work/duties of a minister in a church). first, he chose twelve men to work with and be his messengers. he did not pick the 12 smartest, most educated, or best looking men. he chose twelve working men. the men abandoned their jobs and followed him. jesus ministry involved healing the sick and dead, teaching people about god, and presenting new ideas about the meaning of life. (bring the garden of eden back to a hurting world) jesus christ continued: many religious (jewish) leaders were upset at jesus and his new teachings so they got him in trouble for disturbing the peace and teaching he was the son of god. he was sentenced to death. he was beaten, mocked, and nailed to a cross. he died on the cross. they buried him in a tomb. (a room in a mountain with a large rock as the door). on the third day, he rose from the dead. he conquered death and one day will come back to judge all people. the cross: movie clip jesus teachings the old testament says to avoid work on the sabbath (sunday), but jesus heals people on the sabbath. (challenge: is it really work to help someone?) love god with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. love your neighbor. (who is my neighbor!?-good samaritan story) movie clip forgive everyone, because god forgives you. the goal of this life is to prepare for your life after death. (eternal life). money is not “ours” it is a gift from god to use to help others. god loves you always. its your choice to love him. (the lost son story). christians believe. jesus came into the world to bring people to god. to show people how to love and live purely. jesus was killed, but three days later he came back from the dead. his death brings people closer to god in this life. (closed the separation between people and god). the separation between man and god is closed when a person believes jesus is the son of god who died for all people, and because of this, they receive “eternal life: life after death with god in heaven.” this life is short and temporary, but after this life they will live in heaven: a place of peace, joy, love, perfection, and hope. their mission is to live like jesus and bring hope and love to people, as he did. new testament wisdom: john 3:16 for god so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not die but have eternal life. john 14:27 peace i leave with you; my peace i give you. i do not give to you as the world gives. do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. romans 10:9 that if you con
