要:英语在当今社会的发展过程中越来越重要,而且逐渐成为人们生活中不可缺少的一部分。因此,学习英语已经成为一种潮流。较首先指出阅读技巧的重要性,但是在绝大多数学生中英语阅读仍然存在着问题。他们不知道如何提高英语阅读能力。接着本文将介绍一些阅读技巧及其各自的作用。与此同时,在我们教学过程中也存在着诸多问题。研究如何提高英语阅读能力的教育已刻不容缓。很多学者对此进行了研究,并提出了自己的看法和意见。在研究中,本人主要从以下几方面加以分析:(1)英语阅读的重要性;(2)关于如何提高英语阅读的一些学者的相关性研究,及其理论的缺陷;()本人通过阐述自己的实习经历并阐述自己的一些看法;()关于此课题的发展方向。本人通过研究此课题,从中得到一些新的理论,将会在本人今后的工作中有很大帮助。关键词:重要性,如何提高,英语阅读能力abstract: english is becoming more and more important in our society, and it slowly becomes a part of people life. so learning english is becoming a trend.this paper firstly points out the importance of reading skills in modern society, but reading is still a problem for most of students, they do not know how to improve the reading ability. then, the paper introduces a kind of a better reading process, and several additional reading skills, and gives examples to show the function of each skill, in order to help students to master reading skills. meanwhile, there are some problems in our currentenglish teaching. to study the way of how to improve the education of english reading has no time to delay. many scholars have studied about this aspect, and they raised their opinions and suggestion. i state my ideas mainly according to the following aspect: (1) the importance of english reading.(2) some studies of how to improve the ability of english reading, and the shortcoming of these theories.(3) my experience of teaching practice, and my opinion about how to improve the ability of english reading.(4)the tendency of this subject. i learn much new concepts from this study, and it will help me in more important nowadays and it slowly becomes a part of peoples life. learning english is a trend. people want to learn english in order to get more information. as is known to us all, reading is one of the four essential skills in english language learning. since most students in our country have more opportunity to read english matters than to converse an english speaker, its of great importance for secondary school students to have sufficient training to develop their ability to read. but numerous facts have proved that most of secondary school graduates dont really know how to read. to them only reading aloud is reading. this is because many teachers only emphasize the importance of reading aloud. they neglect the far more useful and important skill of reading silently. in fact very few people need to know how to read out loud, unless they are tv or radio broadcasters, or perhaps actors or actresses. thus how to teach reading widely and effectively has become a problem of utmost importance. here, i want to make a scientific approach to reading of students. therefore, in all kinds of english examinations, english reading is being paid attention. not only college entrance examination in our country, but also the trend in ielts, toefl in the range of the world are tested is very clear. in fact, english reading is college entrance examination in our country have already been exceeded the current teaching material of high school in english. in addition to this, i have to talk about the context of their development. china is facing enormous changes at the moment in terms of economic growth, industrial, social, educational and political development and cultural influences from international sources. its school population reached 185,000,000 in 2005. its development rate in the above areas is phenomenal and has been quoted by experts as second to none in the world over the last ten years. added to this set of enormous changes, china is implementing a new curriculum for the teaching of english, which is nothing short of revolutionary. it turns on its head centuries-old traditional teacher-centered methodologies and requires teachers and students to become more autonomous, creative and personally accountable for learning. this innovation is seen to be one of the greatest educational challenges in the last two decades. its principal concern is to help students of english move from competence to performance. the nc itself is detailed, clear, inspiring and comprehensive. what is problematic is how it is going to be implemented. and this is where action research comes in. action research has a recent history in china, particularly in relation to education, social change and administration. academics like professor wang qiang, with her post-graduate students at beijing normal university, have led the way towards the adoption of as a result, oral english is more important. if we can speak english, we can understand foreigners. we can read foreign newspaper and books. when we grasp english, we can watch foreign programmers. in our daily life, if we can speak english, we can travel to foreign countries without an interpreter. when we need some help, we can speak english to foreigners and they understand what we need and offer us help in time. english is becoming more and more popular today. when our leaders have a meeting with foreigners, they must understand english, because english is the official language. everyone should understand english or speak english. the important records are usually in english. many companies need people who can speak english or translate chinese into english. as a result, more and more people who learned english are needed. our country has been a member of wto, many foreigners come to our country to open factories and find accompanies to develop their business. however, there are not enough english learners to help our country. so we should learn english.the world is developing, and it is becoming smaller and smaller. the advanced way of communication makes people get close to others. english is the world language that people should speak. if we cannot speak english, we cannot communicate with foreigners. learning english is the tendency of todays life. in my opinion, english is our tour to know the world and learn more things from the world. we have many foreign goods, we must know english and then we know how to use them and how to protect ourselves. english is in our life, it is necessary to learn it well and know more about it.1.1 encourage students to lay stress on both intensive reading and extensive reading.we all also know that there are two kinds of readingintensive reading and extensive reading. its most widely found that in english lessons teachers concentrate the students attention on the reading passage by asking them questions about the text; analyzing difficult structures, explaining idiomatic expressions, doing word study, etc. these lessons are usually linked with further study of grammar and vocabulary .this is because reading in chinese secondary schools has never been divided into intensive reading and extensive reading. teachers train their students to practice reading in only one way intensive reading.extensive reading has two different goals: reading for content and learning reading skills through reading. in extensive lessons teachers should try every means to get students to read quickly and widely, and to train them to read independently .in a word ,teachers should do their best to train students to become efficient readers, teach them how to read for information and enjoyment .so a good teacher of english ought to be careful and particular about expense reading ability of their students, which is essential for them, especially for those who wish to accept college education .as teachers of english, we should help them develop progressively their ability to read more and more fluently and widely and help them make good preparations for their advanced study in colleges and universities.1.2 help students to select what they should read. its important for students to choose the reading materials. no matter what kind of materials is chosen, it possesses at least the following two conditions:(a)teachers should help select proper materials for students to read, which should always be interesting and present no difficulties of structure and vocabulary. the criterion for selecting materials is interest value. unless the students are interested in what they are reading, they are unlike to finish it. selection of reading materials for middle school students is arbitrary, novels, newspapers magazines, such as china daily, 21st century, beijing review, shanghai students post, english weekly etc. can be selected .for younger students, fables, folks, myths stories about heroes, readings about the modern life in english speaking countries, etc we will be equally appealing. besides, there are plenty of world famous works that have been written in simple english and shortened, too. the students will find them interesting and not difficult to read. also, readings on scientific theme are interesting and beneficial to the development of reading skill of students. (b)teachers should enable students to pay much attention to the selection of reading materials about linguistics and the cultural content. linguistics studies the general principle upon which all languages are constructed and operated as systems of communication in the societies in which they are used. on the other hand, cultural background knowledge plays an important role in reading process. it means cultural content contained in the material might interfere with students comprehension. it is necessary to examine how these cultural contents conflict with students own cultural assumptions. one important point should be emphasized here. different reading materials are to be prepared for different students. for the excellent readers, its feasible to considerably increase the mount of reading materials, which are more difficult at the same time. the poor ones should be encouraged not to lose heart while reading and some appropriate materials are given to them. 1.3 guide and foster students how to readin the course of reading, the students often come across all kinds of difficulties, teachers should permanently encourage and guide them how to read: first of all, the teachers should tell the students the importance of keeping reading in language study and should try to motivate the students also by telling them that reading widely is actually advances their knowledge of the world as well as their reading and reading will get easier and ease as they go along and they should not be distracted by any unfamiliar words or structures. the important thing is to get the idea and content of the reading material. therefore teachers should emphasize again and again that the important way to keep students reading is to insist on having feedback on what they have been reading. feedback may take various forms. the most popular one is to the students to writer book reports. this, however, often proves to be too demanding for most of the students. teachers may ask them to make brief notes while reading, such as the date to start reading, date to finish reading, author and title of readings,number of pages and chapters, main idea, comments or criticism. secondly, teachers should give the students a brief introduction on the back-ground before directing them to read. e.g. we may introduce something about the allotters life, history and geography conditions of the authors time and the practical significance of his works, etc. be sure to use as much english as we can to express ourselves in the process of introduction. doing so, on the one hand, may improve the students listening ability; on the other hand, our students can improve their ability of direct understanding through our intonation, manners of speaking and gestures. meanwhile, they will get rid of the bad habit of putting everything into their own language. the value of doing so is called killing several birds with only one stone. after introduction, some obstacles of reading have been cleared away and the students are able to put more energy and time into understanding the main points of the whole text, thus knowing the structure of it and being able to extend and reason further. thirdly, teachers should guide and foster the students reading skills while they are reading. before demanding the students to read in the fixed period of time, we may teach them how to cope with new words or phrases. e.g. we may tell them the way of guessing their meanings according to the may discuss with them how to conclude its exact meaning according to their existent problems, and we may also direct them how to eliminate the false and retain the true in conformity with the questions for tests or the questions were designed beforehand. at this time, we should make it clear to the students the two aspects of the reading ability, letting them really wider stand the sense of this sentence to improve the reading speed on the basis of enhancing the ability of comprehension. we may publicly praise the students who have read quickly enough and understand accurately enough, for the purpose of stimulating the reading interest and initiative of the vast majority of our students and also enhancing their confidence in further or later readings. more over the teacher should guide and require our students to memorize and revise what theyve read in time. we must require them to memorize and review some commonly-used words, phrases, key sentence patterns, paragraphs, grammar points and so on. as confucius once said thousands of years ago, reviewing the past helps one to understand the present. if our students have done much reading and kept much in mind, theyll have a sense of being well acquainted with what they have mastered in later readings. by laying stress on the conscious memory of something, i dont mean memorizing naturally something merely when it has appeared many times in reading. the law of memory says that when you want to remember something subjectively, youll get a deep impression of it in your mind, remember it well and firmly and cant forget it easily. of course, you can also remember something you have often come across, after all. i think directing them to do these can not only help them grasp the main ideas but strength their memory and shorten the gap between the superficial marks from the papers and their real reading capability.2. study of improving the ability of english readingin teaching aspect, students also pay more attention to english reading. many scholars study the way to improve students ability of english reading.2.1 liaoyingjun who is a teacher of ruizhou middle school points out that the traditional teaching has its shortcomings that teachers pay more attention to the grammar. students only learn the grammar, sentence patterns and vocabularies. he also points out the problems of english reading teaching that students can not understand and they dont know where to start. besides these problems, the roles of teacher and students are stable. usually teachers ask questions and students answer, and it makes students have little time to communicate freely. at the end of his article, he gives some suggestion of practicing oral english. firstly, teacher should train the interest of students in order to make students clear. secondly, select the material and the situation as to stimulate their communication purpose. thirdly, students should get rid of bad elements and have confidence. in my opinion, our traditional english teaching is very boring. teacher teaches students the language as a kind of subject not a language. in fact, english is a language. it has its features. we should know that we learn english so as to use it to communicate. so we are lack of speaking, listening, reading and writing. we often make sentences using the stable sentence structures in order to practice the structures not the language. i agree that teacher should attract students interest. because when students are interested in learning english they will be eager to know more things. that is the basic condition. at the same time, situation and material are helpful. if teacher can select the material that which students know or familiar with they should be excited and very glad to learn more. as for the confidence, i believe that teacher should give prize or often praise students of their behavior, especially when students make some mistakes teacher should blame them. in fact, students dare make mistakes; if teacher blames them they will feel disappointed and lose confidence. teacher can point out their mistakes indirectly and genteelly.2.2 wu yingwei suggests that students should read more; no matter how difficult they feel. students should have extensive reading and they should think after read .he suggests that we may read: to obtain information for some purpose or because we are curious about some topic to obtain instructions on how to perform some task for our work or daily life to keep in touch with our friends by correspondence or to understand business letters to know when or where something will take place or what is available to know what is happening or has happened ( as repor
