Passage1Reading leadership literature, youd sometimes think that everyone has the potential to be an effective leader. I dont believe that to be true. In fact, I see way fewer truly effective leaders than I see people stuck in positions of leadership who arc sadly incompetent and seriously misguided about their own abilities. Part of the reason this happens is a lack of honest self-assessment by those who aspire to(追求)leadership in the first place. Weve all met the type of individual who simply must take charge. Whether its a decision-making session, a basketball game, or a family outing, they cant help grabbing the lead dog position and clinging on to it for dear life. They believe theyre natural born leaders. 导 。Weve all met the type of individual who simply must take charge. Whether its a decision-making session, a basketball game, or a family outing, they cant help grabbing the lead dog position and clinging on to it for dear life. They believe theyre natural born leaders. Truth is, theyre nothing of the sort. True leaders dont assume that its their divine(神圣的)right to take charge every time two or more people get together. Quite the opposite. A great leader will assess each situation on its merits, and will only take charge when their position, the situation, and/or the needs of the moment demand it. Truth is, theyre nothing of the sort. A great leader will assess each situation on its merits, and will only take charge when their position, the situation, and/or the needs of the moment demand it. Many business executives confuse leadership with action. They believe that constant motion somehow generates leadership as a byproduct. Faced with any situation that cant be solved by the sheer force of activity, they generate a dust cloud of impatience. Their one leadership tool is volume: if they think you arent working as hard as they think you should, their demands become increasingly louder and harsher. True leaders understand the value of action, of course, but it isnt their only tool. In fact, it isnt ever their primary tool. Great leaders see more than everyone else: answers, solutions, patterns, problems, opportunities. They know its vitally important to do, but they also know that thinking, understanding, reflection and interpretation are equally important. 的 。True leaders understand the value of action, of course, but it isnt their only tool. A true leader is someone who develops his or her team so that they can and do hit their targets and achieve their goals. I dont believe that to be true. You couldnt come up with an original thought no matter how hard you tried. You were probably right if you thought that was caused by a lack of sleep. Dr. Horne, a sleep researcher in England, studied 24 college students. One group got their normal eight hours of sleep. The other group didnt get the smallest amount of sleep they stayed awake all night. The next day, Dr. Horne tested the students. He asked them questions that required creative and original thinking. One of the questions was “How many uses can a cardboard box be put to?”法 。You were probably right if you thought that was caused by a lack of sleep. One of the questions was “How many uses can a cardboard box be put to?” 次日,Dr.Horne测试的学生。 The result? The wide-awake students did well on the test .The tired students did poorly. ? “The result? The wide-awake students did well on the test .The tired students did poorly. Research has already shown that tired people can do OK on tests of habitual thinking, like simple addition. But Dr. Horne tested creative thinking only. As part of his study, he offered an amount of money as a reward to the sleepy students if they did well. But even this encouragement wasnt enough to help the students conquer their tiredness. They did poorly. Dr. Horne believes that the part of the brain where thinking takes place may get worn out during waking hours. Sleep may help to repair the brain. “Without any sleep,” he emphasized, “even if you pay closer attention, you cannot do better.” This study gives people something to think about, especially people like hospital workers who must stay awake all night and then make quick decisions.。Research has already shown that tired people can do OK on tests of habitual thinking, like simple addition. This is true regardless of age. People will be alert (警觉的) and receptive (接受能力强的) if they are faced with information that gets them to think about things they are interested in. And someone with a history of doing more rather than less will go into old age more cognitively sound than someone who has not had an active mind. Many experts are so convinced of the benefits of challenging the brain that they are putting the theory to work in their own lives. “The idea is not necessarily to learn to memorize enormous amounts of information,” says James Fozard, associate director of the National Institute on Aging. “Most of us dont need that kind of skill. Such specific training is of less interest than being able to maintain mental alertness.” Fozard and others say they challenge their brains with different mental skills, both because they enjoy them and because they are sure that their range of activities will help the way their brains work. Gene Cohen, acting director of the same institute, suggests that people in their old age should engage in mental and physical activities individually as well as in groups. Cohen says that we are frequently advised to keep physically active as we age, but older people need to keep mentally active as well. Those who do are more likely to maintain their intellectual abilities and to be generally happier and better adjusted. The point is, you need to do both, Cohen says, “intellectual activity actually influences brain-cell health and size.”People will be alert (警觉的) and receptive (接受能力强的) if they are faced with information that gets them to think about things they are interested in. It is constantly borrowing. It started out taking words from Latin, Greek, French, and German. Then English went on to borrow words from more than 50 different languages. From Italian, it took cameo, stanza, and violin, for example. From Spanish and Portuguese, it borrowed the words alligator, canyon, and sombrero. From Native Americans, it got raccoon and wigwam. Peru contributed llama and quinine. The Caribbean islands gave English barbecue and cannibal. From Africa came chimpanzee and zebra, from India came bandanna, curry, and punch, and from Australia came kangaroo and boomerang. Science caused an explosion in words. Some words in science combine parts of Greek and Latin words. They include penicillin, stethoscope, and supersonic. Others were borrowed from languages spoken today. Robot comes from a Czech word. The English language has been stealing words for more than 1,500 years. The most complete dictionary of the English language contains a whopping 600,000 words. Passage 5 There is no doubt that a common language used throughout the world would do much to bring countries closer to each other. Though it is becoming increasingly easy to move from place to place, our inability to communicate with one another gives rise to numerous misunderstandings and makes real contact between people of differing nationalities impossible. Many attempts have been made to overcome this problem and they have all failed. The fear of foreign influence and domination rules out the universal acceptance of any one of the existing major languages. Aware of this difficulty, many linguists have constructed artificial languages which could have no possible political overtones. They have argued that a language of this sort would perform much the same service as Latin did in the Middle Ages. Although linguists succeeded in making their artificial languages extremely simple so that they would be easy to learn, their efforts seemed doomed from the start. The reason for this is that there is no real incentive to learn an artificial language. There is nothing to guarantee that everybody is willing to make the effort; there is no assurance that the learner will have any adequate return for his toil. When people today undertake to learn a foreign language, they are not interested only in speaking it. Mastery of a language makes available to the learner a great deal of worthwhile literature and many current publications. This is the biggest stumbling-block of all for the artificially-constructed tongue. Having no literature of its own, all it can offer is a limited of translations, which are valueless in themselves. Nor can it acquire any literature; for it would have to be used for a great many generations before this could become possible. Moreover, constant use over a long period would bring into being many national dialects and the language would thus defeat its own purpose. Another serious objection is the fact that a language is shaped by use and not by design. It is a living thing which is forever growing and changing. It takes hundreds of years before it can acquire richness and depth. In an artificial language, however, the meanings of words are rigidly defined. Inflexibility makes for an absence of subtlety, so that no really fine meaning can be conveyed. Though this quality might be admirable for scientific publications, it greatly impedes the formation of any significant literature. Latin was ideal in this respect, for it was a dead language with a literature; an artificial one is dead from the start. This makes it likely that existing language barriers will remain with us for a very long time. Passage 6 If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise-and as a result, we are aging unnecessarily soon. Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of aging could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying occupations. Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intellect (智能) and emotion, and determine the human character. (The rear section of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual or emotional faculties.) Contraction of front and side parts-as cells die off-was obser
