His advice to those running companies is that managers need to be less distant. the old model of chief executive as delegator is no longer relevant. One of the chief executives interviewed was Alison Barton. She decided to expand her organization quickly and divide it into several smaller companies, in an effort to encourage employees to feel important and work more efficiently. never rest, she advises. you must improve your position every year, every month ad every day. Just one year standing still can destroy a company.Another interviewee, Frederick Morton, stresses that employees should be praised for their work, adding thats happy workforce is productive. He advises that executives should have an uncomplicated business approach, leaving difficult business theories to management schools and consultants. Former chairman of Lawson finance, Elizabeth Goodall, recommends rewarding individuals for productive ideas. all employees have thoughts on how the company can be more successful, she says. Executives must listen to these and be prepared to put them into practice. She also paces a great deal of importance on being competitive and on being the first to take advantage of a market opportunity: these days, you cannot afford to wait. Geraldine enables, chief executive of Europe COM, needed to turn company attention away from existing products and onto consumer requirements; she had to establish completely new systems throughout the company to support these changes. She also encouraged a policy of risk-taking among staff, which, over time, they responded to very positively. According to Dawson, Charles Ellis at Britco also had a hard job. Many divisions of Britco had strong individual identities and were unwilling to accept changes from head office. However, serious financial difficulties meant Ellis had to reorganize the whole company to save it ; he succeeded in doing this over five years, in spite of negative responses from staff. The final interviewee, David Greg son, believes business leaders should look carefully at rivals products and think about how to make their own brands stronger. it is essential to know how customers compare your brands with those of your rivals, says Greg son.
