UNIT 5 WRITING THREE THANK-YOU LETTERS Background Information vThanksgiving Day(感恩节) Thanksgiving Day is the most truly American of the national Holidays in the United States and is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country.Pepole celebrate it on the fourth Thursday of November every year . In 1620, the settlers, or Pilgrims, they sailed to America on the May flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. After a tempestuous two-month voyage they landed at in icy November, what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. Background Information vThanksgiving Day(感恩节) The Pilgrims of PlymouthRock held their thanksgiving in 1621as a three day“thankyou”celebration to the leader of the Wampanoag(万帕诺亚格人)Indian tribe and their families for teaching them the survival skills they needed to make it in the world .It was their good fortune that the tradition of the Wampanoags was to treat any visitor to their homes with a share of whatever food the family had ,even if supplies were low . Background Information vThanksgiving Day(感恩节) The American tradition of Thaksgiving revolve around a huge and lavish meal ,usually with Turkey as the centerpiece. For those who do not like Turkey rkey ,a roasted or prime rib is common .In many homes family members will each mention something they are very thankful for . Main idea vThe author served in the coast guard during the world war II.On a thanksgiving Day at sea ,he decided to celebrate the true meaning of thanksgiving by writing three very specail letters. TEXT ANALYSIS vTo Whom The letters is writen To his father; To his grammar school principal ; To his grandma . TEXT ANALYSIS vThe Reasons Father: The Rev. Nelson: He had impressed upon the author from boyhood to love books and reading. The authors love of books never diminished and later led the author toward writing books. The author told him whatever positive things he had done since had been influenced at least in party by his morning school prayers. vThe Reasons TEXT ANALYSIS Grandma:She used to teach the author how to tell the truth, to share, and to be forgiving and considerate of others. TEXT ANALYSIS vTheir responses Father : His father showed that after having helped educate many young pepole ,he now felt that his best results included his own son .
