专题能力训练十五阅读理解(六)A(2017天津耀华中学一模,B)It all began with a stop at a red light.Kevin Salwen was driving his 14-year-old daughter,Hannah, back from a sleepover. While waiting at a traffic light, they saw a black Mercedes Coupe on one side and a homeless man begging for food on the other.“Dad,if that man had a less nice car, that man there could have a meal.”Hannah protested. The light changed and they drove on,but Hannah was too young to be reasonable. She pestered(纠缠) her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do something.“What do you want to do?”her mom responded.“Sell our house?”Warning!Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager.Hannah seized upon the idea of selling the luxurious family home and donating half the proceeds(收入) to charity, while using the other half to buy a more modest replacement home.Eventually, thats what the family did.The projectcrazy, impetuous(鲁莽的) and absolutely inspiringis written down in detail in a book by father and daughter scheduled to be published next month:The PowerofHalf. Its a book that, frankly,Id be nervous about leaving around where my own teenage kids might find it.An impressionable child reads this, and the next thing you know your whole family is out on the street. At a time of enormous needs in Haiti and elsewhere, when so many Americans are trying to help Haitians by sending everything from text messages to shoes, the Salwens offer an example of a family that came together to make a differencefor themselves as much as the people they were trying to help.In a column a week ago,it described neurological(神经学的) evidence from brain scans(扫描) that unselfishness lights up parts of the brain normally associated with more primary satisfaction. The Salwens experience confirms the selfish pleasures of selflessness.Mr.Salwen and his wife,Joan, had always assumed that their kids would be better off in a bigger house. But after they downsized, there was much less space to retreat to,so the family members spent more time around each other.A smaller house unexpectedly turned out to be a more family-friendly house.【语篇导读】这是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了Hannah要求父母把家里奢华的房子卖掉,将其中一半的钱捐赠给慈善机构,结果一家人在比之前住的小一点的房子里关系却更加亲密的故事。1.What does the underlined word “inequity” most probably mean in Paragraph 3?A.Unfairness.B.Satisfaction.C.Personal attitude.D.Reasonable statement. 2.What is suggested in the working day, think again.Eating unhealthy snacks at your desk makes you pile on almost half a stone a year,a survey has revealed. The waistlines of women suffer the most, with the average female putting on 6lb 3ozthe equivalent of a whole dress sizewhile men see their weight increase by 5lb 2oz.The report into our eating habits found that,on average,we eat at least two snacks a day, with 30 percent of us tucking into three or more.Women admit eating more than men, with a further 13 percent of ladies scoffing four or more snacks a day.The research,by TheVillageBakery, found biscuits are the most common vice, with 42 percent regularly opening a pack, closely followed by chocolate (38 percent),crisps (32 percent) and cakes (13 percent). And office workers are worse than most.Cakes and biscuits brought into work by colleagues are one of the main temptations office staff give in to.In addition,33 percent admit reaching for nibbles to cope with stress and 22 percent say they need a sugar rush to perk them up in the afternoon.Simon Staddon,of TheVillageBakery, said, “We were aware time-poor office workers can find it difficult to easily access a nutritional lunch. But we were really shocked by the extent to which quick fix lunches are affecting weight gain and general well-being.Popular mid-afternoon pick-me-ups such as biscuits, chocolate and cakes are high in calories, fat and full of sugar, all of which affect your blood sugar levels and ultimately lead to weight gain.”The survey of 2,000 British men and women suggests we are often ashamed of our unhealthy eating.Twenty-four percent of Britons admit lying about how many snacks they eat with 33 percent of women lying, compared to 20 percent of men.Unfortunately, its not as if we are likely to do anything positive to counteract the sweet treats.【语篇导读】研究发现,多吃零食能让很多人在不经意间增加体重,这一情况对办公室工作者来说最为严重。6.According to the passage, women usually put weight on first .A.on the faceB.on the legsC.on the feetD.in the
