阅读理解AMore than 27,000 people from around the UK set off at dawn from London to begin the cycle route through Surrey to the Sussex coast. The annual(一年一度的)54-mile ride raises money for the British Heart Foundation(BHF) and is Europes largest charity cycling event. Cyclists began the exhausting journey at Clapham Common at 6 a. m. , hoping to reach Brighton seafront within an average of six hours.Money from todays event will help the charity to continue its vital work through heart research and the development of its care and support services. Among those taking part was BBC Breakfasts resident(居民)Dr Rosemary Leonard and several colleagues.BHF spokeswoman Gemma Cloke said, “It was quite cold this morning, but everyone set off without any problems.” Those taking part range in age from 14 to those in their 70s. Last year cyclists raised4. 1 million for the charity, and have raised more than50 million since the BHF became involved in the event in 1980. The first ride was held in 1976. It is hoped this years fund raising total could reach4. 5 million. She added : “We have a lot of people taking part, from the more experienced cyclists to those cycling with friends and family in memory of someone and to raise money through sponsorship.”“People are always pleased knowing the money is going to a good cause. There is so much support along the route, with local residents watching the ride. ”“One of the highlights for participants(参加者)is coming along the seafront while people are clapping, which can really help when theyve been in the saddle (自行车车座) for a long time. ”1. What can we know about the cycling event from the text?A. It is the worlds largest charity cycling event.B. Cyclists may raise more money than last year.C. The first event was held by the BHF in 1980.D. The route of the event is 54 kilometers long.2. What can we learn from what Gemma Cloke said?A. Cyclists will receive encouragement from local people.B. Some people doubt whether the money is properly used.C. Most of the cyclists are professional.D. Local people have little interest in cycling events.3. The local residents attitude towards the ride is.A. doubtful B. unconcerned C. worried D. supportive4. What is the text mainly about?A. Cyclists have raised over50 million for the BHF.B. More than 27,000 people like travelling by bike in the UK.C. Charity cycling event wins support from local people.D. More than 27,000 people in the UK join in the charity bike ride.BThe worlds oceans are slowly getting more acidicsay scientistsThe researchers from Californiareport that the change is taking place in response to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The lowering of the waterspH value is not great at the moment but could cause a serious threat tocurrent ocean life if it continues, they warn. Ken Caldeira and Michael Wickett, from the LawrenceLivermore National Laboratory, report their concerns in the journal Nature.Increasing use of oil fuels means more carbon dioxide is going into the air, and most of it will eventually beabsorbed by seawater. Once in the water, it reacts to form carbonic acid. Scientists believe that theoceans have already become slightly more acidic over the last century. These researchers have tried to predict what will happen in the future by combining what we knowabout the history of the oceans with computer models of climate changeThis level of acidity will getmuch more extreme in the future if we continue releasing COZ into the atmosphere, said Dr Caldeira. And we predict the amount of future acidity will exceed(超过)anything we have seen over the lastseveral hundred million years, let alone perhaps after rare disastrous events such as asteroid(小1j-%+)impactsHowever, it is not absolutely clear what that means for ocean lifeMost organisms live near thesurface, where the greatest pH change would be expected to occur, but deep-ocean life forms maybe more sensitive to pH changesCoral reefs and other organisms whose shells contain calcium carbonate(小行星) may be particularly affected if the waters acidity levels keep going up, the team predict. Theycould find it much more difficult to build these structures in water with a lower pH.In recent years some people have suggested storing carbon dioxide from power stations in the deepocean as a way of dealing with global warmingBut Dr Caldeira said that such a strategy should now bere-considered. Previously, most experts had looked at ocean absorption of carbon dioxide as a goodthing一because in releasing CO2 into the atmosphere we warm the planet, and when CO2, is absorbedby the ocean, it reduces the amount of greenhouse warming.1The ocean is becoming more acidic due toA. the lower water pH valueBthe warming atmosphereCthe higher level of COZ in the airDthe increasing use of oil fuels2 According to Dr Caldeira,A ocean absorption of carbon dioxide is a good thingB more oil fuels will be used in the near futureC scientists may predict climate changes with computer modelsD the future situation of the amount of acidity is extremely serious3If the waters acidity level keeps rising,.A ocean life whose structures contain calcium carbonate may be affectedB the waterspH value will become higher and higherC organisms living near the surface are more sensitive to pH changesD some disastrous events will occur more often than before4Most experts once believed storing carbon dioxide in the ocean would reduce A the COZ absorbed by the oceanB the amount of greenhouse warmingC the acidity of the oceanD the gradul release Of CO25The purpose of this passage is to .A show people the findings of a research teamB inform people of how acid the ocean is nowC introduce Dr Caldeira and his teams researchD warn people of the higher level of COZ完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、和D)中,选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项,并标在答题卷的相应位置。用答题卡的考生,先选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。Youth sports teach kids to develop a winning state of mind as well as the ability to become team leaders. Although having 36 is a major part of athletics, the only purpose of sports is to compete and create the 37 mentality(心态)people need in sports.38 have the extremely hard task of getting their young athletes to learn how to play the sport and become disciplined, and ready to play the sport to the best of their ability. 39 , I was at my younger brothers baseball game the other night and his team was 40 by five runs in the last part of the game. While most teams in this situation would be desperately trying to regain their 41 for heroics, his team just seemed to slowly walk around, 42 sunflower seeds, and laugh at jokes made by teammates. I asked my brother after the game why everybody was so 43 about the loss and he said it was because some kids mom brought really good snacks. Some parents have a 44 with coaches shouting at their child.
