We have come to Unit 8 Learning a foreign language today. First Id like to ask you to list in pairs the most important things to do when you are learning English. List them in order of importance. Learning Tips Ask yourself weekly: What do I want to learn this week?Quickly review important new information shortly before going to bed. While doing exercises and alone at home or in your room, speak English aloud. Do five to ten minutes of listening at least four times a week. Look for situations in which you must speak / read / listen to English. Step 2: Listening to a radio show. You are going to listen to a call-in show in which students called in to ask questions about how to learn English better. Before listening to the show predict the content by answering the following questions. Leading in questions What is the purpose of the show?Who listens to the show?What topics are discussed on the show?Who takes part in the discussion?What questions do they ask?What key words you may hear on the show?Now part 1 will be played and the following questions will be answered. What is the topic of the show?What does the caller want to know?What does the caller usually do?What advice would you give to the caller?Next you are to listen to part 2 and complete the chart on page 65. Step 3: Speaking about how to learn English. Learning to communicate in another language may be challenging, but it is also a very rewarding and enriching experience. It is the best passport to discovering another culture. Now work in groups using the following materials to talk about how to learn English faster and better. Language Learning Tips1. Find out what kind of learner you are2. Work at your own pace3. Why not learn with someone else?4. Remember that you can go a long way with just a little language5. Get used to hearing everyday language at normal speedAnd most of all, have fun!Period 2 Reading(LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGAUGE: TWICE AS HARD?)Goals Read about learning a foreign language ProceduresStep 1: Pre-reading Good morning, class! Today we are going to read an article entitled LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE: TWICE AS HARD? Before we read the article, lets have a discussion about the difficulties we face when learning English and the ways by which we may learn it well. Ju Linfen: I find so many of us complaining about how difficult it is to learn English in China. But I think it is not so difficult if we focus our attention onto reading and read aloud only. By reading we get the vocabulary, the grammar and the culture. By reading aloud we learn the pronunciation, intonation, the way to speak. Zhao Yannan: I feel that we can learn English well if we just relax and look for ways to enjoy it. But it is important to establish some independence from our native language and culture. Ma Lin: I agree with Wang Xiaohui that all we need is the right attitude and an efficient method. We all have unpleasant memories of being forced to do boring exercises in the past. But we all enjoyed reading, listening and talking in English now. Step 2: Reading to the tape. Reading aloud teaches us about English in a way that silent or independent reading never can. Reading aloud to the recording or the tape helps us develop and improve literacy skills - reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Listening and reading to other readers stimulates our growth and understanding of vocabulary and language patterns. So lets go on to listen to the recording of the text and read aloud to it at the same time. Step 3: Reading and underlining. Next we are going to read aloud the text once again and underline all the expressions at the same time. To break down difficulties in comprehension of the text, put your questions to your partner or to me. But first, what are your difficulties? Why can you break them down yourselves?
