Verne(18281905)is often called the father of science fiction.Although he was not a great traveller himself, his characters journeyed to the moon(in From Earth to Moon),under the sea(in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea),into a volcano(in A Journey to the Centre of the Earth),around the world(in Around the World in Eighty Days)and to many other places.Jules Verne was born in the French city of Nantes in 1828.When he was a boy he ran away from home to work on a ship. However, his father soon found him and brought him home. After that he decided that any future travel he did would be in books. In 1847,his father sent Jules to Paris to study to be a lawyer.Even though he was busy writing,Verne passed his exams in 1849 with high marks. When Jules told his father he did not want to be a lawyer, his father was very angry. He stopped sending his son any money,so Jules had to earn a living by his writing.Over the next few years he wrote many stories and plays which brought him only a little money. Then,in 1856,he met Honorine de Viane,a rich, young widow with two children. The couple married the next year and their only child Michel was born in 1862.After his marriage,Verne worked as a businessman in Paris. However,he was not very successful at his job and spent most of his time writing books and doing research for the next one.In 1863,he published his novel Five Weeks in a Balloon and in the following year he published A Journey to the Centre of the Earth which brought him fame. His books became so popular and earned him so much money that he was able to leave his job and work plays were written during the Classical Period, from 525 BC to 385 BC.Not only are these plays still popular as theatrical productions, they also greatly influenced playwrights throughout history.Antigone and Medea are among these plays. Then, between 350 BC and 250 BC,comedy came to be much more prominent in the theatre.Sadly, the Dark Ages was a time when drama became nearly extinct. There was no theatre in the Roman empires during this time.Ironically, the Christian church that nearly destroyed theatre was also responsible for its reappearance;the church began to present the Passion Play,a popular dramatic interpretation of the Resurrection during Easter services. It was the Renaissance that saw a huge reappearance in all types of art, including theatre.William Shakespeare, one of the worlds most renowned playwrights, wrote and produced many plays that are still performed regularly even today. At first, the world of drama belonged to men.Even Shakespeares plays were performed by entirely male casts. In the mid 1600s a few pioneering women began to pave the way for women in the theatre. It would be quite some time, nearly half a century, before acting was considered an acceptable profession for women. The 18th century was a time when more plays were being written for and about the middle class.Toward the end of the century, the Romantic period began in Western Europe, which heavily influenced the theatre of that era.Unlike the previous drama, romanticism focused on emotion rather than intellect. This movement continued through the beginning of the 19th century.Realism superseded Romanticism during the 19th century, paving the way for the era of contemporary drama in the 20th century.During the 1960s and 1970s,playwrights such as Tom Stoppard,Sam Shepard and David Mamet began writing plays in which the main focus was the language and dialogue of the play. The public fancy changes through the decades, but our love of drama is as strong as ever.5What can be learnt about Antigone and Medea?AThey were the best comedies of the time.BThey were written during the Classical Period.CThey are no longer popular with todays audience.DThey were
