Yesterday I asked you to look up some information about the famous English novelistCharles Dickens. Now I would like to check it by asking you some questions about him. Now listen to me carefully and try to answer my questions.First show the students a picture of Charles Dickens on the computer, then ask them some questions. T: Who is the person on the computer? Ss: Charles Dickens.T: Yes, then what is Charles Dickens?Ss: He is a famous novelist(小说家).T: Yes, you are right. Have a try!Step II Warming upThe Warming-up exercise makes the students know more about Charles Dickens and the novels that he wrote. In this procedure, all the students are expected to participate. Show the pictures on the computer.T: Look at Picture 1 on the computer. What is it about?SA: Its about a family dinner. Many people are rushing into a prison and they want to set the prisoners free.T: OK, now is there anyone who can say something about the fourth picture?SD: There are two boys who are picking a gentlemans pockets.T: You have done a good job. In fact these pictures are all from books by Charles Dickens, but do you know which books these are?Ss: Picture 1: Great Expectations.Picture 2: Hard Times.Picture 3: A Tale of Two Cities.Picture 4: Oliver Twist.T: Now what have you already known about Charles Dickens and the times in which he lived? Scrooge and his only friendMarley are both mean and cold. They are only interested in making profits and money. They dont care about social responsibilities. We cant learn from them. Instead, we should keep the social responsibilities in our mind. Now lets carry out task two and work in groups of four and discuss the responsibilities of business people towards both their employees and their customers by using the following key words to structure your discussion.Show the key words on the computer.T: Please work in groups of four. Five minutes later, I will check your discussion.Example1: We should try our best to improve the safety standards and hygiene. We should shoulder the responsibility to improve the employees working conditions. We must trust the employees social conscience and working abilities. Only in this way can we improve our products quality and make more profits.Example2: Making profits is very important to us but shouldering more social responsibilities and having social conscience are more important. How can we do so? We should try our best to improve the quality of our products. In my opinion, we should first improve our employees working conditions, that is, safety standards and hygiene. Besides, we should trust our employees fully. Step IV TalkingAsk the students to discuss the two situations in groups of four.T: Now turn to Page 194 of your workbooks. Please read the first part of TALKING. When you finish reading it, please discuss the questions at the end of it in groups of four. I will give you 2 minutes and then I will check your answers.Two minutes later.T: Now, this group. Who will express the opinion of your group?SE: In our opinion, Mr. Scrooge should do something for Tiny Tim. Although it is not his responsibility to care for Tiny Tim, he should realize that only when he makes others happy can he feel happy. Of course people will hate him because he doesnt help others when he can. I can think of a similar example. In our village there is a very rich family but they are so mean that they dont help others at any time. As a result, few people will make friends with them.T: Good, now come to the second part.
