(class work, approx. 5 rains) Hello, everyone. In this unit, we learn a play written by Shakespeare, a famous English writer and poet. The play is called the Merchant Venice. First of all, well listen to some background information about the play, then 1ll ask you some questions about it.Questions:1.What kind of person was Antonio?2. Where were Antonios ships?3. Who was Antonios best friend and what did he want to do?4. What was the problem?5. Who lent Antonio the money?6. Who lent Bassanio the money?7. What was the agreement between Antonio and Shylock?8. What news did Antonio receive?9. What did Portia decide to do?Key:1. A merchant, much liked by everybody and was always ready to help others.2. At sea.3. Bassanio, who wanted to marry Portia.4. Bassanio had no money and Portia was rich.5. Shylock, the money lender.6. Antonio.7. If Antonio did not pay the money back at the end of three months, Shylock could take a pound of flesh from any part of Antonios body.8. Ail his ships were lost at sea.9. She dressed up as a lawyer, dressed her maid Nerissa as a lawyers clerk, and both went to the court of the Duke.The tape script: Antonio, a merchant of tile city of Venice, was liked by everyonebecause he was always ready to help others. He had many merchantships which traded with other countries. At the time of this story., theywere all at sea. Bassanio, Antonios best friend, was in love with Portia, a rich and beautiful lady, who also loved him. Sadly, he could not ask Portia to marry him because he himself had no money. So lie asked Antonio to lend him three thousand ducats. As Antonio did not have any money just then, he went to Shylock, a moneylender. Now, Shylock hated Antonio. The reason was that Antolnio had many times scolded Shylock publicly for being greedy and cruel. However, Shy-lock agreed to lend Antonio the money on one condition. In the agreement, Antonio made apromise to allow Shylock to take a pound of his flesh from whatever part of his body if he did not pay the money back at the end of three months. Antonio agreed to this, took the money and gave it to Bassanio. At the time when Bassanio and Portia were getting married, a letter arrived from Antonio saying that all his ships had been lost at sea and that he would have to give Shylock a pound of his :flesh. He wished to see Bassanio before he died. After their wedding, Portia told Bassanio to go to see his friend at once. Then she thought of a clever plan to save Antonio. She had a good friend who was a doctor of law. She asked him to lend her some of his lawyers clothes and books. She pretended to be a lawyer and her maid, Nerissa, dressed herself as a lawyers clerk.Thus they arrive at the court of the Duke, where Antonios trial was taking place.Task 1: Guessing and discussing. ( pair/group work, approx. 10 rains) Look at page 65 (Warming up) or the screen, there are four pictures on the page, which may be tile covers of four plays by Shakespeare. The four plays are King Henry IV, Hamllet,Romeo & Juliet and 7Yoilus & Cressiaa. Now Read the following quotations from different Shakespeares plays. Do you know from which plays they are taken? What do you think these famous words mean?Task 2: Listening, and speaking. ( class work, approx. 10 mins) 1. Listen to the tape and answer the following questions. 1) In which city did the play take place? 2) How much time passed between the beginning of the play anti the end? 3) How much money did Bassanio need to marry Portia? 4) What should Antonio give to Shylock if he couldnt pay back the debt? 2. Listen to the tape again and fill in the chart of the characters relationship in the play.Task 3: Speaking up. ( group work, approx. 15 rains)Leading in Our world is full of many opposite ideas: right or wrong, truth or lie, mercy or revenge, love or money. Now lets discuss some of them.Debate We will have a debate on the two topics. We will divide our class into two groups. Group A will discuss the topic: Mercy & Revenge. Group B will discuss the topic: Love & Money.Look at page 66. Who lent him the money?.Today well learn more about the play.Leading in (2): by watching slides or video tape about the city of Venice. ( class work, approx. 5 mins.)T: Good morning, class! Do you know the beautiful city in the picture? Yes, it is Venice. Venice is famous for its great art, architecture and culture as well as for glass blowing and lace. Venice is built on 118 islets in a lagoon in the Gulf of Venice, in the northeast of Italy. The islets are joined by bridges. There are no roads and all travel is by boat or on foot. The islets were first settled in the 5th century. A. D. and later became an important trading center, linking Europe and Asia. The city has always been very rich. The story we learn today took place in this city. Task 1: Reading for general ideas. ( individual work, approx. 10 mins) Skim the play and judge whether the following statements are true or false? 1. Shylock hated Antonio and wanted lo take the chance to kill him. 2. Bassanio offered to pay Shylock much more money than Antonio had borrowed from him. 3. Shylock accepted Bassanios offer. 4. Each group will discuss one of the following questions. Group A: Why do you think it was :not possible for Bassanio to marry Portia without money? Suggested answer: Probably it was not the custom of that period the men to marry rich women if they were poor themselves. Group B: What is your opinion of the Dukes character? Suggested answer: He is merciful. Group C: What is your opinion of Shylock? Suggested answer: He is creel. Group D: Why do you think Shylock prefer red to take his pound of flesh rather than to accept the money from Bassanio? Suggested answer: Shylock hated Antonio because Antonio had many times scolded him publicly for being greedy and cruel. Group E: What are the two meanings of FI1 pay him back with all my heart?
