Writing a Resume What is a Resume? nAdvertisement of your: nAbilities nAccomplishments nCapabilities nShould make employer want to meet you nShould be honest, concise & easy to read Resume Format nChronological resume is most common nArrange items in reverse chronological order nNew college graduates should: nList educational background first nThen describe work experiences nDont just outline your background & qualifications nDescribe what you did that was important nGive employers thorough overview of your qualifications Resume Contents nAlmost all resumes have the following sections: Objective Educational Background Work Experiences Honors & Activities Skills Statement about References Objective nFirst major section of your resume nIt communicates two things: nWhat sort of job you are seeking nWhat skills you have to offer nYour objective may be oriented to: nThe position n“Seeking a position as a social worker for the elderly.” nThe field n“Desire a social service position working with youth.” nYour skills n“Looking for a position utilizing my counseling & writing skills.” nA combination of the above n“Seeking a position as a public relations officer in a medical facility. Wish to utilize my skills in communications & photography.” Objectives: Additional Considerations nBe work-centered rather than self-centered nFocus on what you have to offer, not what you want nAvoid objectives that sound like this: n“Seeking an entry-level position which will offer plentiful opportunities for professional training & career advancement” nBe as specific as possible nIf you know the position you want, state it clearly n“Applying for the entry-level accountant position advertised in China Daily” nDo not state a career goal for which you are unqualified nMust reflect a goal you can do with your present skills & qualifications nDo not use such trite expressions as: n “Seeking a challenging entry-level position” n “Looking for an opportunity to advance quickly into management” Education nList your: nUniversitys name nDates you attended the school nDegrees (If you already have graduated) nMajor(s) nMinor(s) nAdditional courses not covered by your Major or Minor nDo so only if it will help you get the position you want nHighlight any strong educational achievements nGPA nMembership in honorary societies nDeans List citations Work Experience nList in outline format: nPosition held nName & location of company nDates employed nResponsibilities nAchievements/significant contributions Honors & Activities nList: nScholarships nAcademic awards nHonor Societies nCampus organizations with which you were involved nBe especially certain to include leadership roles nDont just create a long list nRemember that whatever you list must show that you are suited for the job for which you are applying nVolunteer experiences Skills nList things such as: nLanguage skills nAdvanced English nIntermediate Korean nBasic Japanese nProvide information to support your claims nCET6 Score: Excellent nPassed Japanese Proficiency Test Level 2 nComputer skills nProficient user of Microsoft Office nProvide information to support your claims nPassed National Computer Test Level 1 References nMake statement at bottom of resume nReferences available upon request nReferences furnished upon request General Considerations nResume should look visually appealing to the reader nAvoid cramming & crowding nDont have big blank areas nOne page is best for college students nNever exceed two pages nIf two pages, it must be two full pages nHighlight important information for emphasis nUse bold letters/italics/underlines/capitalization nUse a consistent pattern nPut dates on the right side & align along right margin Outlining nMain Point 1 nSubpoint 1 nSubpoint 2 nSub-subpoint 1 nMain Point 2 nSubpoint 1 nSub-subpoint 1 nSub-Sub-subpoint 1 nSubpoint 2 Create a con
