Scott knew that Amundsen, a Norwegian, was also trying to be the first man there. He wished to get there before the Norwegian. Scott kept a diary during his journey. He wrote: January 6 We are now further south. I believe no man has been before us. There is no sign of the Norwegians. January 10 Yesterday we stayed in our sleeping bags all day. The weather was very bad and we could not go out. Today we only travelled six miles because of the bad weather. We are just 97 miles away from the Pole. January 16 This afternoon Bowers saw something before us. We thought it was a big stone. When we got nearer, we found that it was a flag. We fear the Norwegians have arrived at the Pole before us. January 18 We have found the Norwegians camp. They have taken 21 days less than us to get to the Pole. February 17 Yesterday Evans fell down, and we had to make camp. This morning he marched for a mile and then stopped. We went on. When we went back, we found him kneeling(跪)in the snow with a wild look in his eyes. He died soon after midnight. March16 Yesterday Oates said he could not go on. This morning there was a big snow, and Oates said,”I am just going out.” We knew that he was walking to his death. We knew it was the act of a brave man. We never saw him again. March 20 We cannot leave the tent. The snow is too strong. My foot is a problem. March 29 It seems a pity, but I do not think that I can write more.44. How far away were they from the South Pole on January 10? A. 1 mile. B. 6 miles. C.97 miles. D. 800 miles.45. Oates.C Starting on Wednesday, tens of thousands of visitors will come to Los Angeles to kill digital dragons and shoot (射击) digital guns(枪). They are gamers, and they will be here for the Electronic Entertainment Games Expo (E3), where game designers show what is new in the business. Gaming is serious business. 75% percent of American homes now have video and computerGames, and gaming now earns as much money as the film business each year. Yet most people still think that computer games are childish. They think that they are just silly entertainment. Let me tell you why serious people should take gaming seriously. Recent studies show that the brain is really good at finding patterns (模式) and then doing something called “chunking” joining several steps or pieces of information into one. For example, we dont need to remember all the steps of how we get dressed in the morning. Over time, we see a pattern to the steps and chunk them together. Little by little, we learn to do these things without thinking. Finding patterns and chunking information are so important that our brains make us feel good when we do it. Our word for this feeling that our brain sends us is “fun”. Unluckily, most people think that fun cannot be serious, when it is actually what we get for learning. This is where games come in. Games are all about learning. Games let us practice seeing patterns, which is why they are so much fun. “But some games are boring!” You say? Of course, as soon as we work out the patterns in a game, the fun ends. Six-year-olds love playing tic tac toe. Grown-ups dont because they already know the pattern. Well-designed games have difficult patterns. We can work them out, so they stay fun for a long time. There will be some very well-designed games at E3 this week. But most games will be teaching the same old things. Yet as game designers begin to understand the power(力量) of games, I believe they will start working with more serious subjects. For this to happen, however, we all need to take games seriously. So if you walk past E3 this week, try to be understanding. Remember: Gaming is avery young business and, like most small children, it is loud and confused (困惑的;混乱的). When games grow up, they just might save the world.48. Probably we can read the passage in _. A. a guide book B. a newspaper C. a game book D. a science report49. The writer tells us that everyone should take gaming seriously because _. A. everyone understands the power of games with more serious subjects B. games are popular and the game business earns as much as the film business C. everyone needs to learn about game design and learning is good for our brains D. games are about learning and games might one day help to save the world50. According to the passage, we know that _. A. most Americans have games at home and love to learn about game design B. everyone knows exactly and clearly the steps of getting dressed in the morning C. chunking makes it possible to pay attention to other things while doing something D. grown-ups love any game whether its designed with simple patterns or hard ones七、阅读短文还原句子。(共4分,每小题1分)阅读短文,从下列所给的五个句子中,选四句还原到短文中,使短文意思通顺,结构完整。We all sat around the camp fire.
