Seattle has its Space Needle. And, Longview has its squirrel bridge. The bridge, which has attracted international attention, is now a local landmark. The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars. The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over. One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that days coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council(市政会).The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere named the bridge “Nutty Narrows.”After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started Construction, They built the 60-foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose(消防水带). It cost 1,000. It didnt take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching them the ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became know in newspapers all over the world. In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the worn-out bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.Peters died in 1984, and a ten-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project. 21. What does the underlined phrase “teaching them the ropes” probably means in the text?A. passing them a ropeB. Directing them to store food for winterC. Teaching them a lessonD. Showing them how to use the bridge. 1After Jack had sent some e-mails, he _ working on his project. A. had started B. has started C. started D. starts 答案:C解析:根据句中的两个动作的时间先后和前句中的after判断,start的动作应该是在send之后,send是“过去之过去”的动作,所以后面的动作应该用一般过去时。2The manager was concerned to hear that two of his trusted workers _. A. will leave B. are leaving C. have leftD. were leaving 3Have you finished reading Jane Eyre? No, I _ my homework all day yesterday.A. was doing B. would do C. has done D. do答案A 句意:你读完了Jane Eyre吗? 4When you are home , give a call to let me know you _ safely.A. are arriving B. have arrived C. had arrived D. will arrive答案:B句意:当你到家的时候,打电话给我让我知道你已经到家了。 B.5The discovery of gold in Australia led thousands to believe that a fortune _.A. is made B. would make C. was to be made D. had made be to do译为“将会将要”,was to be made表示过去将来。6Edward, you play so well. But I you played the piano.A. didnt know B. hadnt knownC. dont know D. havent known答案:A解析:句意为:爱德华,你打得好。 7-Kevin, you look worried. Anything wrong? -Well, I a test and Im waiting for the result. A. will take B. took C. had taken D. take答案:B解析:此题无难度。 8Food supplies in the flood-stricken area . We must act immediately before theres left.A. have run out B. are running out C. have been run out D. are being run out答案:B解析:此题考查时态。 D。9If may car _more reliable, I would have driven to Lhasa instead of flying last summer.A. was B. had beenC. should be D. would be答案:B解析:考查虚拟语气。 B。10Can I call you back at two oclock this afternoon? Im sorry, but by then I_ to Beijing. How about five?A. fly B. will fly C. will be flying D. am flying 解析:C解析:考查动词时态。 C。21. The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in order to _. A. offer squirrels a place to eat nutsB. set up a local landmarkC. help improve traffic D. protect squirrels【答案】D【解析】由第二段中的to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars可知,修建Nutty Narrow Bridge的目的是保护松鼠安全地过马路。 22. What happened over the coffee break discussion?A. The committee got the Councils blessing. B. The squirrel bridge idea was bornC. A councilwoman named the bridgeD.
