文档简介

Number Line Activity1) Print the Number Line and Frog. Cut out the frog and the number line. Assemble the number line.2) At the positive (+) end of the number line write the word “ADD”. At the negative (-) end of the number line write the word “SUBTRACT”.3) This is a trained frog named LEGS. LEGS will move when given a command with three parts. The first part tells LEGS where to start. The second part is one of the two words “ADD” or “SUBTRACT”.If the word is ADD, LEGS faces the ADD sign.If the word is SUBTRACT, LEGS faces the SUBTRACT sign. The third part of the command is either a positive or a negative number. If the number is positive, LEGS moves forward. If the number is negative, LEGS moves backward. Example 1: LEGS is given the command, “Start at +2. ADD 3.” LEGS starts at +2, faces the ADD sign, and moves forward 3 spaces. He lands on +5.Example 2: LEGS is given the command, “Start at +2. SUBTRACT 3.” LEGS starts at +2, faces the SUBTRACT sign, and moves forward 3 spaces. He lands on -1.Example 3: LEGS is given the command, “Start at -2. SUBTRACT -3.” LEGS starts at -2, faces the SUBTRACT sign and moves backward 3 spaces. He lands on +1.ACTIVITY: “ABSOLUTELY LEGS”4) LEGS was given the command, “Start at +3. SUBTRACT 3.” Move LEGS on the number line. On what number did LEGS land? 5) Put LEGS on -3. LEGS was given the command, “Start at -3. ADD 3.” Explain where LEGS landed?6) Put LEGS on + 3. ADD -3. Where do you predict LEGS will land? Is this command similar to another command?7) If LEGS is sitting on -6, how many spaces (jumps) is the frog from zero? What is the other number where LEGS can start and be the same distance from zero? 8) Fill out the table below and look for a pattern? Put LEGS onDistance from Zero -5 +5 +2 -2 +8.5 -8.5Describe the pattern you observed? This pattern is called absolute value. It is written like this: = 3 = 3 9) Write another example of absolute value. Write a positive and negative number that have the same absolute value. 10) What is the absolute value of (or )? What is the absolute value of -3.71 or ()?ADDING and SUBTRACTING1) Start LEGS on -3. “ADD +2.” Where does LEGS land? An expression that shows this movement is -3 + 2 . 2) Have LEGS stay at this new location. “SUBTRACT +2.” LEGS goes backward 2 spaces. Where is he? An expression that shows this movement is -1 (+2). What is another expression that would illustrate the same movement?3) LEGS is standing on (-2).a.) What command do you give to land on (-6)? Joanne wrote the command using this expression: (-2) (4). How does this work? What is another expression Joanne could write that would have the same movement?b.) Here is another expression corresponding to a command for LEGS: (-3) + (-3). LEGS lands on -6. Why? c.) Jasmine, one of Joannes friends, said:“I dont like it when I see a problem like this: 8 (-3) = x That is just too much negative energy. I want to rewrite the problem like this: 8 + 3 = xWhy can I turn this into an addition statement? When LEGS does both problems, he lands on the same number. HOW DOES THIS WORKS?Explain to Jasmine why these two commands end up at the same number even though they seem to be opposites. 4) Joanne made up some statements about the addition and subtraction of numbers after she tried a few more commands. Which of these four statements WILL ALWAYS be true? Explain to Joanne your reasons. (You can show a command that will make the statement NOT TRUE.) a.) A negative number subtracted from a positive number results in a positive number. b.) A negative number added to a positive number results in a positive number.c.) A positive number added to a positive number
