Years of studying interviewing have made it clear that it is not a very objective(客观的) process. Personnel officers often hire the person they like best, or even the one they think most physically attractive. Looking good is no guarantee(保证) of doing the job well, however. Uglies or those who are aesthetically(审美地)challenged, lose heart. To get a more objective view, many companies are also using psychological tests to hire both for relatively daily jobs and for positions at senior levels of management. It is impossible to say how many employers use tests, but estimates of test sales in the UK for 2004 were over 1.5 million. The basic reason employers use tests is clear: tests claim(声称) to be scientific and objective. A large body of research has shown that interviews by themselves are not very reliable as a method of selection. Peoples judgements are often very subjective: whether they like the look of someone counts for more than almost anything else. But reliable and valid(有效的) effective tests can offer rapid and more objective information about a would be employee. If a candidate talks well in an interview but his test results suggest that he is a careless person who cannot concentrate, an employer is likely to think twice about hiring him.Taking a serious test for a job is rather different from taking a game-like test. You can spend just a little in answering questions of that kind of test, and you deny the answers and say they are not accurate. But you cannot go to a serious test without enough preparation since you can not afford to be denied and removed again and again.56. In the past, who would be sure to be employed after an interview?A. The person who was well educated.B. The person who had great abilities.C. The person who was physically attractive.D. The person who was appreciated by the personnel officers.57. According to the passage, the underlined part those who are aesthetically challenged in the first paragraph refers to those who are _.A. thought to be goodlooking B. most likely to do the job wellC. not attractive for their appearances D. given the job of interviewing the candidate58. Many companies use psychological tests _.A. to take the place of interviewsB. to select senior level clerksC. to make the employment difficult for candidatesD. to gel really reliable and fair information about candidates59. From the last paragraph, we can conclude that while taking a serious test for a job, _.A. you can not treat it as a game B. you can deny the answersC. you can say the answers are not accurate D. you neednt make much preparationBLanguage is a major problem for the European Union (EU). The agreement or treaty(条约)which created the organization that eventually became the EU, the Treaty of Rome, stated that each countrys language must be treated equally. The original (原来的)six countries had only three languages between them: French, German and Dutch/Flemish. However, there are now15 countries in the EU, with a total of 12 languages. EU documents must be translated into all these languages , and at official meetings the speeches must be translated into all the languages by interpreters . All this translating is very expensive and time-consuming(费时的). It is said that nearly half of all employees of the EU am engaged in translating documents and speeches, and nearly half of the EUs administrative(管理方面的)costs are spent on this task. In the near future it is probable that several more countries, most of them having their own languages, will join the EU, thus making the situation even worse. The problem is not just cost; there are practical difficulties as well . With 12 languages, there are 132 possible translation situations that might be needed. It is often difficult to find people in the right place at the right time who can translate from (for example) Danish into Greek, or Dutch into Portuguese, at a high professional standard. In practice the problem has been made less severe by the use of English in many contacts (接 触)between EU officials, since almost all of them speak some English. However, any move to reduce the number of official languages (perhaps to four or five) would be a blow to the pride of the smaller countries. Another commonly suggested solution is to make English the official language for all EU business. However, this is strongly resisted by powerful member countries like France and Germany. 60. The organization that eventually became the EU_. A. was started by France and Germany B. started with three countries C. was set up by the Treaty of RomeD. included 132 languages 61. Whats the main purpose of this passage? A. To give a solution to a problem. B. To find out a problem and show how severe it is. C. To criticize the European Union for inefficiency.D. To show that the problem cannot be solved. 62. According to the writer, the use of English in contacts among EU officials has_. A. angered the officials who dont speak English B. reduced the number of official languagesC. lessened the effect of the problemD. been opposed by powerful member countries 63. The writer mentions Danish into Greek as an example of_. A. a situation that might be difficult to deal with B. a situation that occurs often C. one of the 12 situations that requires an interpreter D. languages easily being interpreted 64. The writer suggests that if the number of official languages was reduced _. A. the EU would not know which official languages to choose B. countries whose languages were not used officially would be unhappyC. only languages which are easy to translate would be used officiallyD. the smaller member countries would be pleasedCA few years ago, a pilot had to have perfect eyesight and a college degree if he or she wanted to land a job with an American airline. But today, airlines have quitted those requirements because they cant find enough qualified pilots.Airlines must hire up to 62,000 new pilots in the next decades. But qualified pilots are few in the United States. Every year there are more planes being flown. At the same time, 12 to 15 foreign countries are recruiting(招募) American pilots. As a result, pilots are earning spectacular(惊人的) salaries. The going rate for skilled pilots is well over $ 180,000 a year. Some pilots can earn about $ 320,000 plus free housing working for foreign airlines.Because of the shortage, some people say unqualified pilots are being allowed to fly planes. They fear the number of crashes will increase. Each year, more and more pilots with less than 2,000 hours of experience are being hired. Airlines are also bringing on board many more pilots who are older than 50, although law requires pilots to retire at the age of 60.Being an airline pilot is a difficult job that requires people to make life and death decisions under pressure. Some pilots crack(崩溃) under the pressure. The military is also having a hard time keeping pilots. Air Force pilots have to spend at least six years in the Air Force. The Air Force invests(投资) millions of dollars to train each.Experts say this problem is going to get a lot worse. Congress may organize a research group to study the countrys pilot needs. In the meantime, salaries of pilot: will continue to rise and The number of crashes may keep pace.65. What can we learn from the passage?A. They give their owners automatic(自动的) credit in stores, restaurants, and hotels, at home, across the country, and even abroad, and they make many banking services available as well. More and more of these credit cards can be read automatically, making it possible to withdraw (取回) or deposit money in different locations, whether or not the local branch bank is open. For many of us the cashless society is not on the horizonits already here. While computers offer these conveniences to consumers, they have many advantages for sellers too. Electronic cash registers can do much more than simply ring up sales. They can keep a wide range of records, including who sold what, when, and to whom. This information allows businessmen to keep track of their list of goods by showing which items are being sold and how fast they are moving. Decisions to reorder or return goods to suppliers can then be made. At the same time these computers record which hours are busiest and which employees are the most efficient, allowing personnel and staffing assignments(人员安排) to be made accordingly. And they also identify preferred customers for promotional campaigns. Computers are relied on by manufacturers for similar reasons. Computer-analyzed marketing reports can help to decide which products to emphasize(强调) now, which to develop for the future, and which to drop. Computers keep track of goods in stock, of raw materials on hand, and even of the
