Known as the “Pole of Cold”, the coldest temperature recorded in Oymyakon is 71.2 , which is the lowest recorded temperature for any inhabited location on earth.Ironically, Oymyakon actually means “nonfreezing water” due to a nearby hot spring. Most homes in Oymyakon still burn coal and wood for heat and enjoy few modern conveniences.Nothing grows there so people eat reindeer (驯鹿) meat and horse meat. A single shop provides the towns bare necessities and the locals work as reindeerbreeders, hunters and icefisherman. The village is located around 750 metres above sea level and the length of a day varies from 3 hours in December to 21 hours in summer. And despite its terrible winters, in June, July and August temperatures over 30 are not uncommon. There are few modern conveniences in the villagewith many buildings still having outdoor toilets and most people still burning coal and wood for heat. When coal deliveries are irregular, the power station starts burning wood. If the power ceases, the town will shut down in about five hours, and the pipes will freeze and crack.Daily problems that come with living in Oymyakon include penink freezing, glasses freezing to peoples faces and batteries losing power. Locals are said to leave their cars running all day for fear of not being able to restart them.Even if there is coverage for mobile phone reception, the phones themselves could not work in such cold conditions.Another problem caused by the frozen temperatures is burying dead bodies, which can take anything up to three days.24According to the text, Oymyakon _.Ais the coldest location on the earthBhas got frozen water all over the yearCgets its name because of a nearby hot springDcan enjoy quite a few modern conveniences25Mobile phones could not work in Oymyakon because _.Athe batteries are of poor qualityBthe extreme coldness makes them lose powerCthere is no coverage for phone receptionDthe phone reception is too far away to receive the signals26We can learn from the text that _.Adaily problems usually accompany the localsBthe town often stops working because of no coal deliveryClocals only live on reindeer meat and horse meatDlocals have no awareness of saving their resources27.what does the lined word “reception” mean_A receiving B.treat C entertainment D.press conferenceCFrom the health point of view, we are living in a wonderful age. A large number of once fatal illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and surgery. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible killing of people on the roads. Man is opposite to the motor car! It is a neverending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people are killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen. It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盘), his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor car often brings out a mans worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering wheel. They are rude, illmannered and aggressive. All their hidden frustrations and disappointments seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving. The surprising thing is that society smiles on the motorist and seems to forgive the behaviour. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities and towns are made ugly by huge car parks. It is high time a world law were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are not strict and even the strictest are not strict enough. A law which was universally accepted could only have a beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some things that might be done. The driving test should be made to a fixed standard and far more difficult than it is;all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so;the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21;all vehicles should be put through strict annual tests for safety. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. Driving speed should be limited on all roads. These measures may sound extremely severe. But surely nothing should be considered difficult if it results in reducing the annual toll of human life. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor cars.28The main idea of this passage is that_.Atraffic accidents are mainly caused by motoristsBthousands of people in the world are killed each yearConly stricter traffic laws can prevent accidentsDthe laws of some countries about driving are too strict29Which of the following is right according to the passage?AIt is right to build huge car parks in cities and towns.BAll the drivers must be asked to take a test every year.CWorking by car can save time and money.DSociety overlooks drivers rude driving.30Why does the author say “his car becomes the extension of his personality”?ADriving can show his real self.BDriving can bring out his good character.CDriving can make a man excited and joyful.D Driving can make a man quiet and pleasant.31The attitude of the author is_.Aapproving Bcritical Csympathetic DaggressiveD Americans think that travel is good for you. Some even think it can help with one of the countrys worst problems-crime(犯罪).Crime worries a lot of people.Every year, the number of crimes is up and up.And many criminals are young. They often come from sad homes, with only one parent or no parents at all. There are many young criminals in prison. But prison doesnt change them.Six or seven in ten will go back to crime when they come out of prison. One man,Bob Burton, thought of a new idea.In the old days, young men had to live a difficult life on the road. They learned to be strong and brave, and to help their friends in time of danger. This helped them to grow into men.So Bob started“Vision Quest”.He takes young criminals on a long, long journey with horses and wagons(马车),3,000 miles through seven states. They are on the road for more than a year. The young people on Vision Quest all have had problems. Most of them have already spent time in prison. This is their last chance. Its hard work on the road. The day starts before the sun comes up.The boys and girls have to feed the horses. Some of them have never loved anyone before. But they cant love their horses enough. They also begin to love their partners. That love can help them to live a new life. Not all the young people on Vision Quest will leave crime behind them.Three or four in ten will one day be in prison again.Bob Burton is right.Travel can be good for you.Even today,Americans still say,“Go west, young man.”32.In the last paragraph “leave crime behind them”means “_”.A.no longer do a crime B.leave people who do a crimeC.do all the crimes D.leave criminals behind33.Why is Bob Burton right?A.Because he can help with crime.B.Because three or four is better than six or seven.C.Because the young criminals have a hard life on the road.D.Because he can stop crime in the country.34.From the passage we may infer that _.A.getting up before the sun rises can help people out of crimeB.love can help young people to start a new lifeC.traveling can help all criminals out of prisonD.being strong and brave can do with crime35.On “Vision Quest”_.A.young people have bad problemsB.young people grow tall very fastC.young people often help their friends in time of dangerD.young people can do anything freelyE第二节(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。A great life doesnt happen by accident.
