But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” -Albert Einstein If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, chances are you have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy (a medical condition affecting someones control over their movement ) and it means ,combined with her communication challenges and sight problems , that standard assessments (and by “standard”, I mean the ones used to assess kids with special needs ) arent always an accurate measure of her abilities. By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-year-old teacher in Jacksonville , Florida ,who starts his special education class by calling up each student individually to give them much admiration and a high-five (a gesture of greeting or congratulation ). I couldnt help but be reminded of Syonas teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence and self-worth increase rapidly, ” he said . All I could think was: How lucky these students are to have such inspirational teachers. Syonas teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: awesome. Her teacher doesnt focus on what cant be doneshe focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syonas confidence increase tenfold. She uses words she wouldnt have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmates trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try. I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home .Weve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all possess. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success. Ulmers reach as a teacher goes far beyond the walls of his classroom. In fact , he teaches all of us to take a moment and truly appreciate the strengths of an important person in our lives.24.What does the author think of Einsteins quote?A. Funny B. True C. Strange D. But it was a beautiful summer day with a blue sky.Chicago is a great city for eating, and we have enjoyed tasting the different foods. Last night, we tried one of the citys most famous foods: deep-dish pizza. Chicago claims credit for the rich and cheesy thick-crust pizza, covered with a sweet tomato sauce. We topped it with olives and green peppers. We were touring the city, mainly looking for delicious local foods. Today, we enjoyed a Polish specialty at lunch: Pierogis, an Eastern European dumpling-like dish, filled with foods like potatoes, cheese, mushrooms, cabbage and meat. Polish immigrants started settling in Chicago in the 1850s, and the city has one of the largest Polish communities in the U.S. We took a break from exploring the city to talk with some of you! Theres always someone whos a bit 42 . The only solution is to reach 43 and measure against what Warren Buffett calls your own inner yardstick. There is no more 44 measure for comparison than who you were yesterday, last week or lastdecade, when you were at your 45 . Nothing useful ever comes from comparison to others. 46 you see yourself as better thansomeone and you get 47 , or you see someone else as better than you and you feel like all yourhard work is for 48 . It is a fools game. Not one of us is 49 alike. The only direct and honestcomparison is 50 yourself. Everything else is apples to oranges. My opinion is that you are only 51 to compare yourself to someone else if their life 52 is the same as your own. Good luck finding that match. And one thing is for sure. No matter howhard you work and how 53 you are, there will always be someone who can run a little faster, jump a little higher, score a little better or look a little nicer in a swimsuit. And if theres not, you can 54 someone is coming up fast behind you. So how can you always win in life? Become your best 55 . Having an image of your most recent past limits is the perfect thing to 56 you to the next level. If you ran 7 flights of stairs yesterday, then do 8 today. Who 57 if the guy next to you did 15? Itdoesnt make a bit of 58 . You are a more fit person today than you were yesterday. Yourown
